Samsung's new SGH-D700 is the the company's first mobile phone based on the Symbian operating system. With the availability scheduled for Q4 2003, the new Samsung is also going to be the first smartphone with a swivel screen ever made.
Based on the Symbian OS 6.1 and Series 60 user interface like the 7650 and 3650 from Nokia, the device will offer a 16-bit (65,536 color) screen, like the latest Nokia 6600. D700 will offer video recording functions and will allow exchanging video clips via MMS and email.
Most of the built-in applications and functions are pretty much the same as of Nokia 3650, including video player and RealOne player, PIM applications, email client, SyncML support, WAP 2.0/XHTML browser, voice memo and voice dialling functions etc. Just like Nokia 3650, the new Samsung will enable users to expand its 4 MB internal storage memory using MMC (Multimedia Cards), providing space for more 3rd party applications, data and multimedia files.
The phone weighs 110 grams and its dimensions are 89 x 49 x 23 mm. D700 supports cable (USB), Infrared and GPRS connectivity, but it lacks Bluetooth. The standby and talk times provided by Lithium-Ion battery (800 mAh) are not known yet.
SGH-D700 is a tri-band phone (900/1800/1900 MHz). The phone is open for installing third party applications in all languages supported by the Series 60 platform: C++, Java MIDP, OPL, MobileVB (Visual Basic). Note: being based on the older version of Symbian OS (6.1) than Nokia 6600 (7.0s) and also using the initial version of the Series 60 UI, the phone only supports Java MIDP 1.0 and not the latest 2.0.
