PanoRIMio for BlackBerry 10
PanoRIMio is a native (BB10 Cascades), feature rich Panoramio viewer for BlackBerry 10, providing you easy and quick access to tens of millions of Panoramio pictures from around the world, easier and quicker than on Panoramio itself. Countless images of any location are at your disposal within seconds and can be viewed in a multitude of ways.

Multiple location input options (address or place of interest, coordinates in either decimal or DMS format, map, current location from GPS) let you easily select the exact place you want to see pictures of, and you can even choose a range in kilometers around the selected point to include images from.

Don't want to browse by location? There is also a "Tag / Keyword" option that shows images by tags or subject - just type e.g. "HDR" to view tens of thousands of beautiful HDR pictures, or "sunset" to see countless sunset sceneries, or even "Car crash" for images of car accidents from all around the world. Or anything else you'd like to see.

Select from four gallery types to view the images in your preferred way: filmstip-like vertically scrollable list, tile grid, slideshow with configurable interval, or the classic map layer.

The application is also integrated with Google Maps and Street View, showing you the exact location an image was taken at.

Jolla releases Sailfish OS 1.0
Jolla, the Finnish smartphone and Sailfish OS developer, today announced that Jolla's mobile operating system Sailfish OS has reached release 1.0 and is now ready for global distribution. Jolla is also introducing availability of the Sailfish OS experience as downloadable software to devices running Android OS.

The world's first Jolla phones were sold to mobile operator DNA's customers in Finland in late November last year. After the limited availability sales start of Jolla smartphones with Sailfish OS beta, Jolla has released three significant software updates. The fourth update will be released at the beginning of March, after which the software will be commercially ready for global distribution.

"We're very excited to announce this. We've been working hard together with our user community to make the user experience of the Jolla smartphone and Sailfish OS effortless and distinct. We believe that Jolla now offers a truly viable option for all smartphone users. Naturally we are not stopping here, as we continue to provide monthly software updates to Jolla devices and Sailfish OS," says Marc Dillon, Co-Founder and COO of Jolla.

Sailfish OS is a distinctive, gesture-based mobile operating system. Effortless navigation and live multitasking are at the heart of Sailfish OS, giving the user full control of their digital life at a given moment. The OS supports both native Sailfish OS applications as well as Android applications. The availability and interoperability of Android apps in Sailfish OS has increased greatly since the sales started.

"Customers are now able to install their preferred Android app store, and choose from hundreds of thousands of available Android applications. In addition, the active and passionate Sailfish OS community has already developed major social media applications, such as Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp, and Foursquare, natively to the Sailfish OS," Marc Dillon says.

Currently Jolla smartphones are available for orders online at at the price of 399€ (incl. VAT) to all European Union countries, Switzerland and Norway. In Finland Jolla smartphones can be purchased also through local operator DNA's shops, and sales are now expanding to all common retail channels.

Jolla is now rapidly entering into new markets, and is negotiating with partners in several countries, including Russia, India and Hong Kong where Jolla will open online sales in the near future. Negotiations in several European countries are well on the way for Jolla to soon open new channels in main European markets.

Already in two months, Sailfish OS has been developed with major steps in terms of feature additions, fine-tuned performance and increased battery life. Among the major features and fixes have been landscape mode, camera zoom, and improved battery life, to name a few.

The fourth software update to be released at the beginning of March, raising the software to commercial readiness, will again include many important improvements and new features. These will include further improved performance, extended landscape support, lots of visual improvements, lots of new camera functionalities, enhancements to the Jolla store, new general settings, and many more.

Furthermore, thanks to its open development and open source software contribution model, Sailfish OS update cycle is extremely fast, resulting in monthly software releases, and the release plan provides unseen transparency for interested developers. This fits in particularly well for those who want to develop their own products using the Sailfish OS.

Sailfish OS downloadable to existing Android devices: Sailfish OS has been developed to be compatible with commonly available Android hardware platforms. Due to this advanced technology, Jolla is introducing the Sailfish OS experience as downloadable software to devices running Android OS. Users can soon start to enjoy the modern, gesture based Sailfish OS in selected Android devices and also renew the lifecycle of their existing older Android devices.

The Sailfish community has already ported Sailfish OS to several devices including major versions of popular Samsung Galaxy, Google Nexus, and Sony Xperia. Also, porting for highly popular Chinese Xiaomi products is under work in community projects.

In addition, Jolla is releasing its own Sailfish user interface launcher as an Android application, which can be used to simulate the Sailfish OS experience on Android devices. The app will be available for download in the near future from and from common Android market places.

"We see this as a huge volume opportunity for Sailfish OS as there are close to a billion Android users globally. Many of them are looking for new user experiences to freshen up their existing devices. Last year in China alone, about 100 million devices were re-flashed after the purchase with a new operating system. This approach allows Sailfish OS to scale into volume fast without limitations. This is a scaling opportunity in a similar way as we have seen in the mobile gaming industry recently," Antti Saarnio, Chairman of the Board of Jolla comments.

Jolla will release the downloadable Sailfish OS software in phases during the first half of 2014. First, the UI launcher application will be released so that users can start to experience the Sailfish user interface in their existing devices running Android OS. Later Android smartphone users will get the full Sailfish OS to their devices.

New partnerships: Jolla has formed new key partnerships in order to scale up its device business and Sailfish OS availability: with Rovio Ltd., Jolla launches a special The Other Half Angry Birds smart cover providing exclusive Angry Birds user experience. With F-Secure Corp., Jolla co-operates in mobile security and establishes trusted cloud services for their customers. All Jolla customers will enjoy gigabytes of free secure cloud storage integrated with their Jolla device experience. With Tieto Corporation, Jolla will offer integration services to OEMs and ODMs willing to start the use of Sailfish OS in their products.

"We believe that now is the momentum for next generation mobile operating systems to emerge. The current dominating mobile operating systems are being developed more and more towards closed ecosystems by their overly dominant owners closing their platforms from other businesses. At the same time the internet business growth already comes from the mobile internet, leaving many major businesses without sales channels and differentiation opportunities. The world needs a mobile operating system which is open to developers, customers, service providers and different business models. Just in a few months we have shown how fast an open operating system can develop compared to closed ecosystems. It's time for free choice instead of closed walled gardens," Antti Saarnio says.

Jolla is demonstrating the Jolla smartphone with Sailfish OS 1.0, Sailfish OS for devices running Android, and The Other Half partnerships at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on February 24-27, 2014. Jolla can be found in Hall 1, booth 1B25.

Jolla and F-Secure are currently working to make younited a best fit for the needs of Jolla users. As a plus, both companies are from Finland, a leading country in security and privacy, Jolla's CEO Tomi Pienimäki comments.

"We believe that our new secure cloud service younited is a perfect fit for Jolla, because we both are very serious about privacy. Jolla is the new smartphone from Finland, and we are very proud of this cooperation," comments Timo Laaksonen, Vice President, Content Cloud, F-Secure.

Jolla partners with Rovio to offer Angry Birds The Other Halves
Jolla today announced the world's first brand partners for its unique The Other Half concept. Rovio's Angry Birds and Makia's clothing can soon be experienced in an unseen way through Jolla smartphones.

The Other Half is an original patented Jolla innovation, which customizes the user's smartphone in a way previously unseen. Attaching a specifically designed smart cover to a Jolla phone instantly adapts the look and feel of the phone with unique ambience, custom sounds, wallpapers, videos, partner feeds, and much more.

"The Other Half offers brands and companies a new fresh and distinctive way to deliver a co-branding experience, by making the Jolla device look, feel and sound like the brand. In addition to branded physical smartphone covers, The Other Half can be customized with various branding and direct sales elements inside the phone, through Jolla's specific partner space. With The Other Half brands they can gain prime visibility not possible with other mobile platforms, but also have an easy and distinctive interaction channel with fans," comments Sami Pienimäki, Chief Marketing Officer of Jolla Ltd.

Angry Birds lands on Jolla: Rovio's globally successful Angry Birds characters will be soon made available with The Other Half smart cover for the Jolla smartphone. Jolla and Rovio have agreed to start the co-branding of an Angry Birds themed The Other Half, including e.g. visually stunning physical covers, tailor made ambiences, sounds, images, videos, and more, which are expected to become soon available for Jolla users. The final content is currently under development, and is targeted to be announced in detail during Q2/2014.

"This co-branding concept gives Rovio a new fun way to delight the fans, and to expand the Angry Birds experience in an innovative way," says Peter Vesterbacka, CMO of Rovio Ltd.

New level of brand experience with Makia's Nordic clothing line: The internationally known Finnish clothing company Makia is co-creating with Jolla unique The Other Half concept for its clothing line. By attaching the Makia designed smart cover to a Jolla phone, the user will get a full-blown Makia experience through the Jolla partner space. For Makia, the new partner space gives great possibilities to direct the Makia brand story to fans with the means of storytelling, e.g. music videos and news/event feeds, as well as visualizing the product catalogue, and addressing special offers, to name a few benefits.

"With the custom made wallpapers, ringtones and other sounds, direct online store access, photo galleries, product catalogues, and feeds to current news and events, the Makia The Other Half will be an effective marketing and sales tool for our brand, and a sought-after experience for all Makia fans," says Jarno Luotonen, Creative Director / Marketing, Makia Clothing.

Rovio Angry Birds and Makia co-branded The Other Half smart covers are showcased at the GSMA Mobile World Congress, February 24-27, 2014, Jolla booth 1B25.

Both Rovio and Makia branded smartcovers are now in development, and the aim is to have the products available during the first half of this year. Jolla now offers the co-creation opportunity for all brands and companies interested in this exclusive and new marketing and sales concept.

This will provide users with up-to-date map data and rich location information, such as restaurants and hotels, from over 190 countries around the world.

Enabling fast and accurate retrieval of positioning information anywhere in the world, these services are essential for any mobile maps experience. EasyStreetView ported to Blackberry 10
EasyStreetView (Nokia N9 version here) has been ported to Blackberry BB10. This time it is not a QtQuick port but a native Cascades rewrite. The BB10 version additionally brings support for GPS, PanControl serving as a simple compass to show current heading, and several other enhancements, all of which will also be added to Harmattan and Symbian versions.

EasyStreetView is basically a Google Maps client optimized for simultaneous (and therefore quick and easy) Street View access and use. The map and panorama are integrated with each other (marker on the map follows street view, and vice versa) but can also be panned and zoomed independently.

Nokia continues to FINISH OFF MeeGo, Symbian and ITSELF - they're cancelling Ovi Store support for Symbian and Harmattan applications
It looks that what's been done to Symbian and MeeGo so far still isn't enough for those who destructed Nokia's own operating systems and the company itself.

Now, starting from January 1st, they're cancelling support for Symbian and Harmattan applications in the Nokia Store. A message stating so has just been sent to all Nokia Store publishers. The existing content will remain available, but neither new applications nor even updates to the existing ones will be accepted. They are going to focus SOLELY on Windows Phone and the Asha series, i.e. only on what they sold to Microsoft.

It looks that Nokia continues to do EVERYTHING it takes to support Microsoft, even if it is harmful to Nokia itself. Or else, what other company (especially in THIS financial condition) would be just giving up like this on yet another revenue source, and probably quite a good one considering that only in September Symbian and Harmattan users have downloaded nearly 700 copies of my applications (and I surely am NOT the most popular Ovi store publisher), which shows that there is an ongoing demand for Symbian and MeeGo software.

And it makes me wonder what has happened with Nokia's PROMISE to support Symbian until 2016. A company that doesn't keep their own promises should get what it deserves, and I hope that Symbian and Harmattan users will not forget how they've been cheated and misled.

Hopefully by that time someone else will decide to launch a '3rd party' appstore supporting Symbian and Harmattan.

Sailfish OS achieves hardware and application compatibility with Android. The next batch of preorders for Finland starts today
Jolla has announced that Sailfish OS is now compatible with the Android ecosystem, in terms of application and hardware compatibility. Android applications will run directly on Sailfish OS without any modifications, and users will be able to take full advantage of the Android application ecosystem available through various app stores globally. Jolla will co-operate with leading global app stores to ensure users can seamlessly download Android apps just as they would do on any Android device.

Jolla has also achieved Android hardware compatibility by developing Sailfish OS to run on common hardware produced for Android, particularly smartphones and tablets. Vendors interested to utilize Sailfish OS are now able to develop phones and tablets based on many different chipset and hardware configurations. This new level of compatibility will enable device vendors who use Sailfish OS to fully utilize the existing Android hardware ecosystem.

Due to extremely positive feedback and increased demand in the past weeks, Jolla is now offering another pre-order opportunity for the second production batch through It is targeted to Finnish customers only at this point.

DNA to launch the Jolla smartphone
As the first operator in the world, the Finnish DNA will launch this year the Sailfish OS smartphone from Jolla. DNA will start selling the Jolla phone as the only operator in Finland, as soon as they enter the market. Jolla will be available in DNA Kauppa stores and DNA online, as well as at selected DNA retailers.

"As a Finnish operator, we consider it important to support this new Finnish success story, in which we see enormous potential. The partnership with Jolla reflects DNA's manner of doing business and is a fantastic example of the way in which we want to be involved in interesting innovations that bring real added value to their users. We boldly apply this start-up mentality to our own operations as well", said Pekka Väisänen, Vice President of DNA's Consumer Business.

DNA has been involved in the Jolla smartphone development from the very beginning. "In a spirit of 'co-creation' that is characteristic of Jolla, we have been able to influence the device's design and usability, allowing us to convey our customers' wishes directly to Jolla's development team, already at the design stage", said Väisänen.

"It is valuable to find a good operator as a partner in the domestic market. The cooperation between DNA and Jolla has been extremely rewarding, and we place particular value on the feedback regarding the wishes of customers, received from an operator that knows its clientele. Our two companies are equally enthusiastic about the launch of Jolla smart phones at DNA Stores nationwide during the last quarter", said Jolla CEO Tomi Pienimäki.

The first Sailfish OS phone - The Jolla - announced
As expected, at the launch event in Helsinki, Jolla has just announced its first Sailfish OS based smartphone called simply... the Jolla. Featuring a 4.5" screen, it has a plastic case consisting of two parts, with the back part being interchangeable and the device discovering its colour and modifying the UI theme to match it (a feature called "The Other Half"). The phone will support 4G (LTE), it will have a dual-core processor, 16 GB of built-in storage memory expandable via a microSD card slot, and an 8 Megapixel AF camera. Display resolution was referred to as "HD", which probably means 1280x720 pixels. The phone will have a microUSB port and user-replaceable battery. It was confirmed that the Jolla will support Android applications, and it was the only information about software development I was able to find. No news regarding native development, e.g. some developer programs stimulating it.

The phone will start shipping in Q4 2013 (or "by the end of the year") at 399 Euros. Pre-orders (three options) can be placed already now at

MoonCalc, Biorhythms, StarFinder ported to Sailfish OS
I've just finished porting another three applications of mine from Harmattan to Jolla's Sailfish OS:

* Biorhythms - biorhythm calculator for two persons, with interactive graph and cycle interpretation

* StarFinder - quickly and easily locate in the sky stars, planets, constellations, meteor showers, asterisms, and more.

A few weeks ago I also ported SunCalc - an application to track the Sun's position in the sky and calculate Sun-related data. SunCalc Deluxe will be ported this week.

Some further visual tweaks and improvements will be made once I can get hold of a Sailfish OS device.

Jolla strengthens its board and management
Jolla enters the next phase in its development and prepares for the sales start in the second half of this year. The number of personnel has grown to 70 and the team extends to a wide network of collaboration partners. To ensure the successful market entry and further growth, the company is strengthening its board and management structure.

The Jolla Board continues to be chaired by Antti Saarnio, one of the Jolla founders. The other board members are Steve Lau from China Fortune, Mohamed Boukerche, a representative of a private investor, Ari Jaaksi, an industry advisor and a long time expert in open source development, and Stefano Mosconi, CTO of Jolla and one of the company founders.

Jolla is appointing Tomi Pienimäki as the new CEO as of May 6th. Tomi joins Jolla from Itella Corporation, one of the largest logistics operators in the Nordic countries. At Itella, Tomi has gained extensive experience in business management and managing large technology organizations. He also has experience from the start-up world in the role of a board member in several companies and having co-founded Done Solutions, an IT company, in 1999.

This appointment allows Marc Dillon, who has been Jolla's CEO as of October 2012, to fully concentrate on the development of Sailfish operating system as Head of Software Development. Marc has been in charge of Jolla's software development right from the start and his strong focus on this will be crucial in the months leading to the market entry of the first Jolla phone and the company's success when the sales starts.

"Jolla is a great company with an exciting and promising future. I truly believe we can make a difference and bring something unique to the consumers. My task is to listen very closely to our customers and further build the collaboration network. I also want to ensure that our team can fully concentrate on the most important task: bringing the first device to the market this year," says Tomi Pienimäki, the new CEO of Jolla.

"Tomi brings a great combination of expertise in leading large technology organizations and understanding of the world of growth companies. He is an excellent addition to the Jolla team and will offer valuable insights into the company operations," says Antti Saarnio, Chairman of the Board. "I warmly thank Marc for his inspirational leadership in the CEO role during the past months. Marc continues to lead our Sailfish OS development, and his drive and talent continue to be crucially important for us, when we navigate towards the launch of our first device," Antti Saarnio continues.

"I am really excited to get an experienced executive such as Tomi on board so that I am again able to give 100% attention to what I love – working on the product with the Jolla team. An important part of my role will also be spreading the news on Sailfish OS to the world and further grow the movement we currently have supporting and co-creating it," says Marc Dillon.

Jolla will showcase its first device in May. A pre-sales campaign is expected to start after mid-May, and the actual sales start will take place during the second half of 2013.

Jolla's first smartphone to be unveiled in early May!
A truly good news for all those (including myself) who had been so disappointed about having to wait until late 2013 / early 2014 (as previously announced) for the first Sailfish OS smartphone from Jolla: it will be announced in early May (!) with pre-orders to start soon after that. Money obtained from pre-orders will be then used to cover the manufacturing cost of the first batch of phones.

But wait, there's more! Jolla will offer custom software configurations (probably application sets, UI customization) to choose from (with different price levels) and those pre-ordering the phone will be able to choose what suits them the most.

I guess it's time to quickly port all my applications to Sailfish OS (which, BTW, is a quick, easy and very pleasant process).

SunCalc PREMIUM for Nokia N9 / N950
SunCalc PREMIUM is a much enhanced version of SunCalc - an application to track the Sun's position in the sky and calculate times of all Sun related events (sunrise/sunset, dusk/dawn, day/night length, twilights, transit, etc). In addition to all features offered by the standard version, SunCalc Premium provides the following enhancements:
  • storing three favourite locations and switching between them (in addition to coordinates obtained from the GPS receiver)

  • entering coordinates manually or selecting your locations on a map

  • Altitude Limit function to monitor when the Sun gets above/below user selected altitude and how long it stays above it each day

  • Shadow Calculator and Shadow Compass to calculate Sun shadow's length and direction for any time and location, for an object of user-selected height

  • Day Length Graph - an interactive graph showing the length of day (sunrise-to-sunset and dawn-to-dusk) and night for the entire year

  • Sun's azimuth and elevation is calculated and shown for each hour - along with Sun Compass this allows quickly checking where in the sky the Sun will be at any date/time

  • advanced settings to choose how to calculate day length (sunrise to sunset or dawn to dusk) and sunrise/sunset times (for the center of Sun's disc or its upper limb touching the horizon, with or without atmospheric refeaction accounted for)

  • time zone setting for each location - graphs and data are calculated in local time of the destination

  • real-time calculation of Sun-related astronomical data (azimuth, elevation, distance from Earth, hour angle, right ascension, declination, ecliptical latitude and longitude, apparent diameter, obliquity of the Ecliptic, etc)

  • and more...

With SunCalc you can easily plan all your activities depending on day length and sunlight intensity, schedule your trips and vacations to get the most of Sun light and the longest days in the destination of your travel, photographers can use the program to choose the time and location of the best Sun position and shadow length/angle for their scenes, it can help you set up your solar panels... or simply keep you well informed about everything related to solar illumination and daylight.
