Not entirely, my E66 came with a non-functional version of QuickOffice (v.4.1.35.0). Still don't know why... |
When I had the E66 (now E71) it also couldn't edit documents. It could open them though. I hace no clue why Nokia decided to cripple QuickOffice in E66, but I wouldn't call it "non-functional" though.

Only open a doc file indeed, I call that non-funtional or better crippled, and E-series unworthy. |
Maybe they decided that editing documents with non-qwerty keyboard will not take place...
Indeed it's sometimes strange how Nokia differentiates phone models - not with essential firmware issues but with (annoying) 'features'.

about E serie being everything that N had and more
Why would N users be pissed off? They have a choice if they wanted the features by a bit more expensive phone...
Why does nokia have the E71 and then now also te E63? They are pretty much the same right? E63 is just a bit less..
For example look at Vista:
Basic -> Home -> Ultimate
Business->Enterpise->Ultimate
if we compare that to the nokia phones, then that is what i want
i want the Vista Ultimate of the nokia phones, the phone that has everything, that is the uber device, the most expensive one. No concessions at any front.

hi jcompagner,
I agree with most of you about Eseries being everything that Nseries has and more. On the communicator fanboy, it would be nice, and not so much on the Eseries (happen that Nokia thinks communicator should be categorise under Eseries).

I agree with you that E90, E71, E63, etc. is like Vista Home and Enterprise. But in my opinion, Nokia differentiate Nseries and Eseries as Multimedia and Enterprise. It is like computer for Business use and Gaming use. Hardware configuration will be different.
Therefore, it would be nice for Nokia to consider putting the Multimedia feature into Enterprise unit for the coming Communicator. Afterall, I believe executives in Nokia besides running business, PLAYs too. That will help in creativity too.

I agree with Michal regarding TV Out. I use my E90 as a business device and would find it very useful if I could connect it to a TV or a pico-projector to give a presentation. TV Out isn't just for entertainment any more, it's a business tool. The entertainment functions are just "gravy" for use on those long trips between the USA and Europe.

Being directed to a mtg today by my e90 I had a few thoughts about the evolution of the phone's software. It's all very well integrating everything with web services, but the on board apps need more integration.
F'rinstance: when you schedule an appointment, in the location field you should get the option to select either a Maps favourite or address from Contacts; if there's more than one address for the contact you should get prompted home/business/whatever address (Maps can already handle this last part, I think). When the alarm for the appointment comes, you would be asked if you want directions (driving or walking) to the location; if yes, Maps fires up automagically and off you go. If it were really swish it would work out where you are, how long you need to get to your appointment's location, add a suitable (user-defined) factor of safety and prompt you at that stage. All of the information is probably already on the device, but it's not very joined up. Of course, given Calendar still can't read birthdays across from Contacts, this is still probably a way off...

TomJ, I hope Nokia reads this forum because those are great ideas and should be incorporated into the next generation communicator. Another thing I'd like is the ability to specify a time zone when entering a meeting time. I frequently have meetings is other time zones and when I travel the times are always adjusted. Sometimes I rememberand sometimes I forget to correct the time.

According to Eldar Murtazin - chief editor of mobile-review (he is noted as one of most reliable sources), there will be no E9x devices coming up soon in the way and form factor we all got used to (e.g. keyboard etc).
He said in his forum that Nokia discontinued E9x for at least 2 years ahead. There might be some other devices coming up though.
Nevertheless, as some of you mentioned here earlier, lets wait for February and see..

I donīt think Nokia will discontinue the Communicator series. But thereīs two new ways I think they will try out during next year:
*A new device with the same concept as the N97. Itīs the Nokia IP08/RM-331 which is developed according to leaked documents.
Nokia roadmap 2008/2009
The "wide touch screen" displays in this roadmap which is heavily circulated by now must be an 800 x 480 because itīs presented as a model specific feature. A wide touch display instead of the Eitre (N97) with 640 pixels must mean an 800 pixels wide one.
The Nokia RM-331/IP08 is the logical successor to the E90 but if they use the N97 style with a sliding/tilting keyboard it will probably not be labeled as "Communicator" (The Nokia 9300/i was called "Smartphone" for example). Itīs probably only "Nokia E92" or "Nokia E82".
A device in the N97 style doesnīt needs the external phone part but has the laptop mode and can be used on the same way as the E90 with open flip.
The other device who can be regarded as an E90 replacement is the HSDPA equipped Internet Tablet (N820?).
Itīs very probable the RM-331 will be released in Februar 2009 and it will be the E90 successor even if they drop the "Communicator" and call it "Nokia E82".

The succussor to the E90 could be the "Mobile Office 09" in the list referred to above. Prototype will apparently be ready for a 3GSM announcement.

The Mobile Office 09 is probable but I think it will have close resemblance to the RM-331 which according to the roadmap has:
Widescreen touch, Naviscroll, QWERTY, AGPS, FM radio and transmitter, 5MP AF camera, WiFi, Bluetooth, TV-out
Thatīs the logical specs for an E90 successor. In the same list the N97 is specified with itīs codename Eitre so the RM-331 isnīt the N97.
Itīs not impossible with an N-series device (N98?) as the RM-331 and with the Mobile Office 09 as a sister model in the E-series. Itīs not impossible Nokia is going to release a new "Mobile Office" device called "Nokia E92 Mobile Office" instead of Communicator.

There are 3 possible E90 successors in the "leaked road map": the IPO8, the Ivalo, and the Mobile Office 09. Proto types of all 3 of these devices is targeted to be complete by the end of 2008, meaning that a new communicator could be announced at 3GSM, which is historically where communicators have been announced. I can't wait for February; it should be an interesting month.
