MeeGo 1.1 is for developers only, see Nokia Conversations. Excerpt:
For developers’ eyes only: MeeGo version 1.1
GLOBAL – Today marks a new project release of the MeeGo software, the open-source next-gen operating system for computing devices that Nokia and Intel kicked off earlier this year. The release brings it to version 1.1. This includes updates to the Core operating system, together with the Netbook, In-Vehicle and Mobile Handset packages. An updated Software Development Kit (SDK) for version 1.1 will follow shortly. So MeeGo’s well on its way and showing great progress.

So what is a “project release”? Let’s start with what it isn’t. This isn’t a finished product for you to load up on to your phone and use on a day-to-day basis. The user interface is neither finished nor is it representative of what the experience will look like on future Nokia devices (we’re creating our own unique experience using Qt). What it is, is a generic version intended to allow developers and device manufacturers to get familiar with the code and the capabilities of future devices.

The main updates in this new release are that key mobile technologies such as cellular and sensors are built into the core OS. In the handset package, there’s a basic user experience for tasks like voice calling, SMS messaging, web browsing, music and video playback, photo viewing, and connection management. The in-vehicle package also has a sample home screen and features speech recognition. The whole bundle is available for download from the MeeGo site.

The Netbook release will work on Intel Atom netbooks, while the Handset release will work on the Nokia N900 and Intel’s Aava reference device. Developers who have the N900 with the latest 1.3 update can set their device to dual-boot into MeeGo on a memory card and play with what’s on offer. Note that we don’t recommend that you do this if you aren’t a software engineer. MeeGo is intended for as-yet-unreleased handsets and other mobile computers. Really. Don’t do it unless you’re a developer or a phone manufacturer.

(If you do it anyway and want to restore the latest Maemo software, it’s available at nokia.com/n900).

And this is what MeeGo looks like right now.

    This is the in-vehicle version:

Here’s part of the handset interface:

    And here’s the netbook version:

So that’s version 1.1. Version 1.2 is scheduled for April 2011, by which point the MeeGo handset user experience software should be pretty much complete. For all the technical details, jump to meego.com.
See also MeeGo 1.1 Release.

i did exactly as described here:
http://wiki.meego.com/ARM/N900/Install/MMC

it worked, the n900 boots into MeeGo, but it's only a one-time boot.

After restarting the phone, it boots maemo again.

The UI looks good, but it's definitely an development version, nothing
for normal use. I think, they have still a lot of work to do, but it's worth it.

Hello,

I think it is just better to wait for Meego to be stable and actually a comercial release instead of it just being for developers. Unfortunately, I am not a developer so I shall be a small child and wait Neutral .

The MeeGo Wiki has a description on how to dual boot PR 1.3 and MeeGo 1.1, see this page. Excerpt:
Dual booting Maemo 5 (Fremantle) PR1.3 and MeeGo 1.1
WARNING: This guide is experimental and everything you do with this guide is at your own responsibility and risk

WARNING: DO NOT RELY ON WALL CHARGER, ONLY USB CHARGING FOR 1.1 IMAGES, see bugs.meego.com bug 2260

This is a simplified guide for dual-booting with u-boot on Nokia N900.

You must be using the PR1.3 kernel and nothing else. You will likely end up in a reboot loop if you don't have this otherwise. To check this, in Maemo X-Terminal, type "uname -a" and make sure you see:

      Linux Nokia-N900 2.6.28-omap1 #1 PREEMPT Fri Aug 6 11:50:00 EEST 2010 armv7l unknown

    and "dpkg -l | grep kernel-modules" should show 2.6.28-20103103+0m5

You will need a 2 GB microSD card or bigger.

    1. Enable the maemo.org extras-devel repository, see http://wiki.maemo.org/Extras-devel (The software hosted in extras-devel is not ready for normal users! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't play with it unless you really know what you are doing. It is recommended to disable the extras-devel repository after you have installed the package below, and do not install any updated packages that you might be notified of while extras-devel is enabled. Be ready to file proper bug reports instead of posting complaints.)

    2. Install the 'uboot-pr13' package from 'System' section

    3. Verify it's installed by restarting your N900. A penguin should show up at startup and U-boot will be mentioned, let it time out and boot into Maemo.

    4. From http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/meego-codedrop.php (type in your IMEI), download meego-handset-armv7l-n900-final-mod-1.1.0.0.20101101.3-mmcblk0p.raw.bz 2 -- we require IMEI/EULA but in practice the images are redistributable under certain conditions, see the license files for more information.

    5. Follow http://wiki.meego.com/ARM/N900/Install/MMC#Installing_Rootfs_on_extern al_MMC_card and write the image to your microSD

    6. Insert the microSD and turn on the N900, let U-boot menu time out and MeeGo will boot.

    7. Enjoy!

To boot back in to Maemo turn off your phone, then either remove the microSD and then turn on your phone, or turn it on and interrupt the boot during the countdown by pressing a button and then type "run noloboot".

If you want to remove U-boot you can as root in Maemo run: apt-get install --reinstall kernel-flasher

As can be seen from the MeeGo 1.2 Release Plan, there will be an update every week:

http://wiki.meego.com/Release_Engineering/Plans/1.2

This update will also be available from http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/meego-codedrop.php, so N900 users can follow the development of MeeGo 1.2 as it proceeds. MeeGo 1.2 is planned to be feature complete on 2011-01-26.

A company named Digia previews a custom UI built on top of MeeGo running on a Lenovo notebook and the N900.

http://www.meegoexperts.com/2010/11/digia-ui-running-lenovo-notebook-n okia-n900/

Quote:

At the MeeGo Conference we got to see a custom UI running on the Lenovo Notebook and Nokia N900 by Digia whos core business areas are enterprise and mobile solutions, employing over 1,500 experts in Finland, Sweden, Russia and China. They are attracted to MeeGo because of the fast software development cycle and ease of use. The company claim that this only took them about one month with one developers time

If anything - it does serve to show how flexible the MeeGo architecture is with regards to creating user interfaces.
