Phone: Nokia E73

I've been having issues with the Nokia browser in my E73 for at least a year and finally diagnosed the problem: lack of TLS 1.2 support. That's not really surprising because T-Mobile abandoned this phone less than a year after release, while unbranded FP2 phones like the E72 and E5 continued getting firmware updates for years. Would anybody tell me if one of these included a TLS 1.2 browser upgrade? (Other Symbian 3.2 phones, i.e N-series, should be good for testing as well.)

To check for TLS 1.2 support (assuming your FP2 phone received all the firmware patches), just visit https://www.howsmyssl.com/ and skim the results. Some sites that don't work at all without TLS 1.2 include

collegetimes.com
allareacodes.com
club.myce.com
camelcamelcamel.com

and growing by the day.

Thanks!

Following-up to my own post, as I finally found the answer...

The stock 3rd Ed. FP2 browser doesn't support anything beyond SSL3. The "Networking_Improvements.sis" upgrade adds TLS 1.0 support, in addition to better certificate management and perhaps some other things. I'd been operating in the dark all this time, in part because it never had an accompanying readme file. Briefly removing "Networking Improvements" and trying https://www.howsmyssl.com again revealed the ugly truth. OpenSSL (Nokia's likely code source) first got TLS 1.2 support in March 2012, which was about the time the company was in chaos, and "Networking Improvements" got released just a year or so later. It's unfortunate timing, but understandable why they chose to not include bleeding-edge functionality. (Not sure what happened to 1.1, though.)

What surprised me is that apparently ALL later Symbian phones, from 5th Edition to the PureView, also support only TLS 1.0. So in spite of the fancy touch screens, cameras, and the lot, modern Symbian phones ALL have outdated encryption, and are suffering the same fate as my E73. The only solution is Opera Mini, now showing adverts, which is a sad way to end.

Would love someone to contradict me.

I held out longer than most, but this finally closes a chapter. I'm off to investigate a Sailfish phone. Smile
