The network operator through which the phone is to be sold is responsible for that antenna. Most CDMA phones sold in the United States come with an external antenna due to reception. These operators seem to have weak signals in many areas.

And some even think that their customers want such awful antennas. Well, some actually might; often you see at least in American movies people making a show of pulling out the antenna with their teeth before answering or making a call.
I'm glad we're past that in the more developed countries.

Hi guys,
Regarding to the antenna - CDMA networks hasnt such a large number of base stations like GSM networks, CDMA/TDMA provides network coverage with a les amount of cells than GSM, because that phone desire antenna, in some cases very long antenna!!!!
CDMA phones are almost always equipped with such antenna. The Nokia 2280 also does have a very long antenna, yet normally it does not need to be extended, only if coverage is weak, because all Nokia CDMA phones do also have an internal antenna. For that, reason CDMA phone can works in basements or elevators where any GSM phone drops dead.
Cheers
Apoc

| In this neighbourhood the GSM coverage is good; GSM phones without external antennas work fine in elevators, basements, tunnels, metro, buses, trains, virtually anywhere.

We have some CDMA networks in India and none of the phones I've seen so far have these huge antennae. Short stub ones and even some phones with hidden ones.
