Can anyone else confirm this on their E70? Michal?
Boot the E70, check the free RAM (e.g. in Best TaskMan). 20MB or so.
Open the keyboard. Check again. 13MB!!!! Close keyboard again, still 13MB!
It seems that the OS is opening a whole second instance of the UI in RAM to cope with the landscape mode rather than (as on my N93) simply switching the existing instance into a different mode.
Is it just me? Any comments? Losing 40% of your free RAM in one hit unnecessarily strikes me as crazy.

Hi Steve,
I'd have checked this for you but my E70 is in for repair at the moment because the bluetooth hardware died on it
Good to hear that even if the E70 has this problem that the N93 doesn't as I'm interested in getting that model.
Can you tell me how much RAM the N93 has free when it's booted up and the total RAM?

The N93 has almost 20MB free after booting. Very impressed by it so far. My E70 review will be up on AAS on Monday and the N93 a week after that. I'm sure Michal's got his own reviews lined up for My-Symbian

Sorry Steve, I don't have the E70 (I very much prefer E61) and I cannot check this for you. Someone else please?

Unfortunately, I'm still waiting for the promised N93 and N73. The person who promised to send them two days ago is either too busy or simply not too reliable. Maybe I'll spend that time on writing the very much overdue reviews of N80 or 3250...

On my E70, TaskMan shows 20.9Mb just after booting, drops to 14.9Mb in landscape mode, then recovers to 17.9Mb when I close the keyboard.

Hmm.... My loan E70 has firmware 1.0610.05.07, 30-05-06. Do you have a newer version?

Anyway, it's a real shame - here's hoping Nokia read this and find the bug, assuming that's what it is.

So the newer firmware the less memory with the keypad open? Steve, don't update your E70 or you may end up with 5 MB free

Ah so the N93 doesn't have any more free RAM available than other S60 3.0 devices like the E70 on bootup then. That's a shame but never mind.
Still good to hear that your really impressed with it.
I suspect if the N93 doesn't suffer this memory loss when it switches to landscape that it's a perfectly fixable problem for the E70. Unless of course the QWERTY keyboard's driver loads when you open the flip and it needs huge amounts of RAM. Shouldn't be the case though really.

The N93 only loses a MB or so when switching to Landscape. it's almost certainly a huge firmware bug in the E70.

I wonder why Nokia put 58 MB RAM (of which over 32 MB is available) in the N70 and then went back to 18-21 MB in new phones... It doesn't make any sense. The same for 235 MHz processor in the 3250 (and its low resolution screen) and only 206 MHz in hi-res E-series phones, which forces developers to use pixel-doubling in games (see SkyForce) because of insufficient CPU speed to handle full screen animation....

I never liked E70 anyway.
Regarding the N93, it seems that Nokia prefers AAS. You've got several devices on loan and I wasn't even sent the promised one.

Does someone noticed that playing DOOM on N70, we dont need to free more RAM (compress memory with 3rd party apps, do little tips/tricks to get more RAM or such thing..) Sorry for asking this because of with my phone, if I open DOOM from menu, my phone always restart. There's no process running in the background except the default process from the phone itself
I'm sorry that I'm getting run out of topic..
