I've finally got mine on Thursday nite. So luckily we already have a new firmware on Firday I've upgraded yesterday nite, and haha... here's a tip and trick which took me all night (or should I say, wee hours) to figure out. Hopefully, future firmware will stick to this rather than we having to perform this "trick". Actually, when I read that someone in my local community posted that the menu speed has been improved... and I did realised that too (in fact, it is damn fast! menu speed) on my phone right after the upgrade, but then somehow this menu speed mysteriously went back to the same as the initial firmware... ok ok... can everyone try this:
1. Reboot your phone
2. Flip down to full screen mode
3. tap on the "up arrow" tab on bottom left hand corner of LCD screen. Then tap on any of its menus. Take note of the "speed" of opening these menus.
4. Tap on the large "Main Menu" icon (2nd icon on the bottom left of LCD screen). Take note of the animated transition effects. Also take note of the "speed" of this effect.
5. Now, go to Media Player and start the Video player. Playback a video file, perhaps the demo if you have not encoded any videos.
6. Now go back to the main screen and test out step 2 - 4 again... SUPER FAST MENU RESPONSE
The trick is, playback a video (NEED NOT complete the whole video, just start playing something) and LEAVE THE VIDEO PLAYER ON and do not use Task Manager to kill it.
Now, this does proves that the P990i's menu speed can be this fast! The transitional effects greatly affects the phones overall speed and performance. The video player somehow helps to restore the menu speed to its MAX. I hope SE can read this and please, in the future firmware, give us an option in the device menu to turn ON or OFF this showdowing transition effects!
Hi Michal, can you try it out? If it works, you should also realise the speed improvment is really huge... Can you help feedback to SE about this? The menu speed is greatly improved with transitional effects removed, and I am sure some precious memory may also be saved since such transitional effects definitely takes up some memory.

Yes, indeed amazing.
It is like you mentioned that the video disables the "slow" transistions, and since the video can control this, I am pretty sure someone will find away to get this feature working without having to start the video.
looks like the option in XP of enable/disable fade effects.
I have the same issue, update downloads the software, flashes to the update screen and then always goes back to the start. I have no issues syncing and nothing in the firewall log so I am assuming there isn't anything there. Tried without the memory stick and deleting files in the blob directory, but that makes no difference. What does the pressing c do? Maybe I am doing something wrong there. I haven't formatted my c drive yet.

I've had my P990i since Wednesday, and all in all i'm pretty impressed. I have found that there are a few bugs. The menu's are a bit slow,.
I have a found a bug where you try to zoom into a picture and the phone reboots.
I also had a problem with a relooping on/off button. Everytime I press the on'off button to turn the phone off, it switched off, then come back on again.
I had a problem with the back light not going off either, even though I've set the backlight to auto, Power save on 1 min.
I have the same firmaware as the starte of this post CXC162037 R4B001
All this talk of up grading sounds good, but where do I get the update installer, I've looked on the SE website but can't find it.
Has anyone got a link?
Also while I'm having a bit of a whinge, on my P900, the indicator light flashed green all the time, and when bluetooth was active it flashed blue. the P990 doesn't seem to do this, or does it?
any help on any of these issues would be gratefullt received.
Here is what I just did, my first time using SEUS ...
Had a little bit shaky hands given some people trouble.
PC: Downloaded the latest updater as explained here
PC:
Hit install.
Then opened the installer from the menu.
Nice flash presentation.
Accepted the disclaimer.
Choosed the port type (the left one).
Then got the Start screen.
Followed the instructions.
P990:
Shutdown phone.
Connected the phone while holding C.
PC:
USB device found pop up screen.
Then it failed with an error.
Disconnected phone and rebooted the PC.
Then started up again the installer.
P990:
Took out the battery of the phone.
Took out SIM.
Put battery back in.
Hold down the C on the phone.
Connected the USB to Phone.
PC:
After a little while, the installer told me to stop pressing the C.
Then it told me Generic P990 something.
Asked a few times if I really wanted to update and that I did take a backup.
Then it started downloading the software.
Then it started updating the phone, while in the meantime telling me not to touch the phone.
After about 10 to 15 minutes (nice progress bar) it was done, and the phone was updated.
P990:
Disconnected the phone, and started up.
Was like the first time when I opened the box.
Took about 5 minutes to configure the phone.
And then there was the SMS message of registering and a new Bluetooth screen, asking to turn it on.
I noticed during the upgrade it basicly used up 50 % of the battery life, so make sure you have a full battery as recommended by SE.
Not sure it helps, since it is pretty straightffw proces, but just want to share what I did step by step as asked by bloomp.
Greetz,
Boris

Indeed. SE should add an option in Control panel to turn the transition effects on and off.

Try formatting the phone. I already suggested it to another person and it worked for him. You can always restore your data from backup (if you make one).

PLEASE always give the ORGANIZER firmware. It is INCORRECT to give the Phone firmware. Being a registered member for FOUR YEARS, you should really know that.

Wow! It only used about 15% of mine. But maybe that's because I have USB charging enabled so maybe it was charging the battery while updating the phone....
Bad news, I'm afraid. The new P990i firmware has broken all Personal Profile Java applications (not Java MIDP). All PP Java applications, every single one, now fail with Reason Code = USER, Reason Number = 130.
I was planning to release jZip and jText this weekend, but now I will wait until this serious problem is fixed.
Michal: if possible, please can you set SE know about this through your contacts.

I got the update prog now as well. One thing if I update, will I lose the golf game and quickoffice or are these :
a.) Backed up when when it performs the back up before updating?
b.) Part of the Z drive.

I've just sent an email to my SE contact and to SE DevSupport.

It seems like this firmware is breaking down Agile Messenger beta 1 as well till it cannot even start. I have tried it on Chinese Chess and though it works, it slows down to almost a halt after about 10 moves. Tried it with Meteor too and it crashes after 1 min or so of playing

The good news is that this firmware fixes sound output. It is still too quiet, but 22 kHz and 44 kHz audio works again. I again have properly working sound in Lemmings beta and N-Player beta!
