M600/P990 USB Mass storage
| Michal Jerz wrote: |

P990 and M600 support USB Mass storage, which means that it is enough to connect the phone to your PC using the USB cable to see the entire memory card as a drive. (USB port mode has to be set to "File Transfer" in Control Panel / Connections / USB). Unfortunately, you can't see the internal drive this way. |

Since the P990´s manual is so overwhelming I really think this one of the smaller tips that are easily overlooked for new owners and result in getting annoyed at the slow PC Suite filemanager or wondering why Disc2Phone doesn´t work *LOL* (own experience)
So just do ...
MENU>>TOOLS>>SETTINGS>>CONNECTIONS>>USB>>FILE TRANSFER MODE
... when you want to see your M600/P990 as an extra drive in explorer.
A very fast way to copy music and other stuff to your memory stick

How does this thread differ from the sticky FAQ? |
Well I thought (but do correct me if I am wrong) the idea was that the FAQ is like a link to all the key topics in an answering mode kind of style, assisting the search function and guiding us to the right threads.
But there is so much more of simple tips and tricks that actually don´t really need to make it to the Official UIQ3 FAQ & Tricks but that we can post/replicate here and easily discuss and even get better tricks by having people interact. Some of the little nifty tips are mentioned in a 50 page long thread, and if everyone that feels like it, kicks them here too, we have like a multiple input thread that we can refer to from the FAQ and even some might make it to the Official UIQ3 FAQ & Tricks if you consider them worthy.
As an example, the simple use of your phone as a USB harddisk, or how to check the memory, has been asked quite a few times (including myself) and if we collect/discuss them here, I can link to the actual post from the FAQ but we have user interactivity here.
If I get them by PM (the tips/tricks) as you mentioned in the FAQ I would have to become the judge of the quality, where here we it will be automaticaly commented and improved if a certain tip is not all that good.
Offcourse in due course it could result in a new topic like Nasharty's UIQ2 FAQ but I believe the P990/M600 are still to young to get to that stage as we are all discovering new possibilities and new firmware.
So maybe call this one P990/M600 Tips/Tricks and FAQ discussion instead ?
If you feel it is one to many thread, we can just close it and I remove it fron the FAQ.
If you think it could be a good idea, it might be an idea to update your reply at the FAQ to post to this thread.
Greetz,
Boris

OK, now I get it. Great idea! Do you think I should make this one sticky, too?
P.S. Yes, I will be watching this thread and will be adding all interesting tips to the "official" site's FAQ & Tips page.

Well, I'm not sure if it's a bad idea... When this topic grows and has several pages, people will start posting the same things over and over as many people do not read previous pages (some people do not even read previous messages on the same page). Somebody has to control it or it'll become illegible. But it's just a thought of mine.

P990/M600 Temporary disable the artistic slowness / fade in FO.
Requires latest firmware R3A04
Hidden in the P990 firmware thread adnhk revealed a wonderfull trick to get rid of the artistic "slowness" of the transition effect.

Hi All,
I've finally got mine on Thursday nite. So luckily we already have a new firmware on Firday I've upgraded yesterday nite, and haha... here's a tip and trick which took me all night (or should I say, wee hours) to figure out. Hopefully, future firmware will stick to this rather than we having to perform this "trick". Actually, when I read that someone in my local community posted that the menu speed has been improved... and I did realised that too (in fact, it is damn fast! menu speed) on my phone right after the upgrade, but then somehow this menu speed mysteriously went back to the same as the initial firmware... ok ok... can everyone try this:
1. Reboot your phone
2. Flip down to full screen mode
3. tap on the "up arrow" tab on bottom left hand corner of LCD screen. Then tap on any of its menus. Take note of the "speed" of opening these menus.
4. Tap on the large "Main Menu" icon (2nd icon on the bottom left of LCD screen). Take note of the animated transition effects. Also take note of the "speed" of this effect.
5. Now, go to Media Player and start the Video player. Playback a video file, perhaps the demo if you have not encoded any videos.
6. Now go back to the main screen and test out step 2 - 4 again... SUPER FAST MENU RESPONSE
The trick is, playback a video (NEED NOT complete the whole video, just start playing something) and LEAVE THE VIDEO PLAYER ON and do not use Task Manager to kill it.
Now, this does proves that the P990i's menu speed can be this fast! The transitional effects greatly affects the phones overall speed and performance. The video player somehow helps to restore the menu speed to its MAX. I hope SE can read this and please, in the future firmware, give us an option in the device menu to turn ON or OFF this showdowing transition effects!
Hi Michal, can you try it out? If it works, you should also realise the speed improvment is really huge... Can you help feedback to SE about this? The menu speed is greatly improved with transitional effects removed, and I am sure some precious memory may also be saved since such transitional effects definitely takes up some memory. |
I really liked it and hope just as adnhk it would become an option to disable the transistions.

| Hey, this works on my M600i too! I just tested it. Much much faster UI! I hope SE puts this as an option for the M600 too in future firmware updates.

This rather strange phenomenon clearly shows how fast the UIQ3 UI *can* be, so lets hope SE pcik up on this and do something in the next firmware.
I'm wondering if it is something to do with the onboard video acceleration - with video player shut the hardware acceleration may be switched off, but when it is open the hardware acceleration would be active - which explains the sudden turn of speed in the UI (the transitions don't appear fully switched off, just very accelerated), although I guess probably at the expense of precious operating RAM.

there is a way to back up your contacts, tasks and calendar to your memory stick. Just go to "more - contacts/task/calendar manager - backup (or restore)". The good thing about this is that everything is preserved perfectly. No messy Outlook conversions. In Contacts, all your folders are preserved, and your contact pictures are preserved! If you intend to buy a bigger and better memory stick, an idea is to save the 32 Mb one for backups.
Now for a questions for everybody: Is there a way to take the backup files out of the memory stick and save them on your hard drive? Or maybe e-mail them to yourself on gmail? (my new place for backups)

In USB file transfer mode you should see your full memory stick, including the backed up file ....
Willl give it a try later on, but I am pretty sure it will work as I tried to install a third party app and I can see in file transfer mode all the files
Once we have it confirmed, we just need to test to restore them and it becomes a great trick

The Calendar and Contacts backup files are industry standard .VCF and .VCS files compatible with all decent PIM applications. They're stored in D:\Other\Backup folder of the Memory stick.

| Another tip on a small problem but may be overlooked by some. If you are gonna install SE PC Suite onto your PC, make sure you have Windows XP SP2 (as opposed to SP1 only). Looks like it is a must and there is no way of getting around this. Don't even bother trying. Without XP SP2, the PC Suite just won't install.
