I mentioned this in another thread but is worth a mention here:

Quote:
Hi all,

We are proud to unveil The Nokia Software Updater, launched today.

The Nokia Software Updater is a Windows application that enables you to update Nokia mobile device software (firmware) over the Internet using your PC. The application can be downloaded from the Nokia UK Product Support Internet pages at
http://www.nokia.co.uk/softwareupdate

The Nokia Software Updater offers the same updates you would receive at a Nokia Service Centre. The added advantage is the convenience, as you can now easily perform the update yourself from any location with an Internet connection, at a time suitable for you. Keep your phone software up-to-date, or fix a potential operation problem you may have by regularly updating your phone firmware.

In the future, every new S60 product will be compatible with the Nokia Software Updater, but at the moment the application is only available for selected Nokia devices including Nokia 6630, Nokia 6680, Nokia 6681, Nokia 6682, Nokia N70 and Nokia N72. During the autumn, the application will be available in different languages on different web pages and many other products will also be available for software updates.

The Nokia Software Updater has been made to be as customer-friendly as possible. All you need is a PC and the standard sales-pack data cable - no dongles, no adaptors, no fuss. A typical update takes around 30 minutes. Plus, you don’t need to wait for your device to be returned from Nokia Service Centre.

Great news! There is not a single Nokia Service centre in my country. Hopefully, I'll be able to update my E61 firmware soon.

That's not quite true. It's 200MB with all the variations for each different language, etc included. However the phone is bound to only download the firmware it needs for it's language which will be a lot smaller. Still a huge download to do over a mobile network, better if it works with WiFi on phones which have it built in.

Nokia doesn't make a phone that has 200MB of storage except for the N91 with the 4GB HD.

I flashed a friend of mine phone which is 6630, and it downloaded the right fm for it which supports Arabic interface, I don't know if Nokia would add this for the rest of S60 3rd edition as they did for N72 or E70 wont have this cool ability as well.

Of course people have smaller memory cards. They don't ship with a memory card of that size and if you just wanted to make calls, check e-mails and send SMS's then you don't even need a memory card at all.

As I stated before, the download won't be 200MB big. Have any of you even read on how quick the process is on Nokia's site? Far too quick for an average broadband connection to download 200MB's in the time they state.

As FastlaneJB has stated, the phones don't come with a meory card that big. The E61 has this:
Up to 64 MB of fixed user data memory
Expandable memory: 64 MB hot swappable miniSD card

The firmware is also not stored on the memory card, but on the internal memory.

This was the much awaited feature. I am really glad. The last shroud of uneasyness in buying Nokia phones have now been unveiled.

How can you update the internal memory if the firmware is in the internal memory?

one way is to install a mini kernel and boot it instead, maybe even off a memory card -then update the firmware using it.
