OK guys, here's the letter.

Comments and suggestions - factual, literary, legal and otherwise welcome.

Please note :

Every word has been chosen for maximum impact. This is not a rant or a retelling of anyone's particular UIQ 3 experience. It is a succinct appraisal of the SE/UIQ 3 situation as we feel it stands now.

We aim to come across as factually correct, courteous and keen to have the changes implemented, without allowing emotionally charged language to intrude.

Enclosed as read-only pdf below Cool, lines numbered to ease the commenting process. Copy option also enabled.

Hosted for public viewing at

(Thanks to makbil for some final 'tweaks' and suggestions)

Well I would have liked to comment but you blocked cut/copy/paste on the pdf and I am to lazy to type the quotes from hand.

@krischik

the file is read-only so that it is edited in a controlled way....do you remember how the FW thread on the SE dev forum got a little out of control?

Perhaps you can type the first 2 words of the offending sentence or paragraph followed by your suggestions....or do you think a wiki type approach will work ( I'm concerned that it won't).

aqualung, good stuff. At last year's Symbian Smartphone show I was surprised that very few SE and UIQ staff knew about the P910i!

Things to add IMO:
- missing features advertised and even showed in official whitepapers
- our wiki page with bug list. it was a BIG job to help SE and what? It shows to him that we really care and want to help but SE remained closed to our help.

Hi Aqualung

A very good letter! Thank you for your effort. As a P1 owner (that SE replaced my P990 with due to said problems) I even feel more strongly about the P990 problems and Sony Ericsson's subsequent lack of communication and support.

I will help where ever I can.

Cheers

@makbil

SE and UIQ staff were not aware how popular and stable the P910i was and none that I met had used one. I got the impression that most of the SE people were new to SE.

@prart, mdutoit, thanks for your feedback. The letter will be reworked over the next week or so till it seems ready...

AFAIK, PDF has DRM (Digital Right Management) fine tuning which supports more then simple "read only on/off". But then: maybe your tool does not

Well the one about us beeing beta tester is the one. I needed to read it twice and I am still not shure what you wanted to say.

And a hint from my times working for a magazine where I had some interesting discussions with the layout guys: A serif font and full justify with hyphenation is easier to read in printed media.

Serifs are actualy made to ease reading long passages of small print. They create a virtual line along the bottom of the characters which the eye can follow.

Sans-Serif fonts - on the other hand - are for small amount of large text where the serifs would give a jerky apperence.

But it only works when the resolution is high enough - dot matrix printers, (cheap) ink jets , (cheap) computer screens etc. pp. can't print/dispay the serif fine enough - hence the tentency to use sans serif fonts nowadays (and us getting a headache when we have to read the stuff).

Last not Least: how are we going about signing the letter?

@krischik

sorry that the letter font gave you a headache Wink . Aesthetics ( final font, formatting etc ) will be finalised later.

The sentence about the beta testing is admittedly somewhat vague and has been amended.

I'll put up a revised version of the letter every day or two.

As to the signing, suggestions, anyone ?

As much as I would like that, I have concerns about making email addresses or other personal information of participants public. Perhaps a solution might be to only include this information in a hard copy sent to SE HQ postal address.

One of the options for signing, with Michal allowing, would be nicknames plus general - Members of My-Symbian.com. But indeed, this would be up to Michal.
Other option would be first and family name of those who want to sign it.
Ps. Have not yet read the draft. Will do it shortly.

My first post, so hello to all Smile

I think it's a great idea, maybe it will drive SE to do something...
