Now that UIQ Technology has officially filed for bankruptcy, it's clear that the platform is now dead and won't be further developed. It's a very sad moment because UIQ surely is (was?) one of the most mature and advanced Symbian OS based platforms.

But it's worth noticing that UIQ Technology people are THE LAST to blame for what happened. They worked hard for the last 6 years in a small team, and the results of their work was what we all enjoyed so much since the P800.

If there's someone to blame then it's Sony Ericsson's lack of clear vision and strategy of what to do with the UIQ platform, and Motorola's completely chaotic behaviour (joining Symbian only to quit it, becoming an owner of UIQ Technology and not doing much about it, etc). Sony Ericsson's hardware design problems (P990 issues etc) and their unwillingness to equip their UIQ phones with a powerful and up-to-date hardware definitely didn't help the platform, either.

It must be a really hard time for UIQ Technology employees, who invested many years of their lives in creating and developing the platform. I think that they must be really disappointed and discouraged, not to mention all the personal aspects (losing a job never is a nice and easy thing).

Those of us who've been using UIQ phones for many years and have always considered UIQ the most sophisticated and advanced mobile OS, please sacrifice a few seconds and write a couple of words to the UIQ Technology team in this thread. If you don't know what to say, just say "Thanks!". I think they deserve such a farewell and it will raise their spirit a little bit. Please, be sure that some of them are reading. I already got a couple of emails from them after posting my thanks....

Nice summary Michal, reflecting my thoughts entirely. As others have already said, where from here?
WM is not very appealing at all to me, S60 is needing an injection of something and the iphone is good but not good enough. Android is in it's infancy.

I love my P990i / P1i and UIQ and at this moment nothing will replace them. The iphone keeps me amused on boring winter nights but it will not replace my P1i as the main device.

It is sad indeed, and having UIQ since the P800 has been a pleasure, even though SE have done their utter best to destroy it and ultimately succeeded.

Good luck to all the UIQ guys and I hope they get sorted with something soon.

There is almost nothing to add.

Only: Thank you very much! I enjoyed UIQ very much as well.

It was a hard decision for me to go for something else and now, that I'm using S60 I really know what I've lost and it is very very sad that UIQ is now lost forever.

Farewell!

Thanks - I still don't know where to go from here. There is nothing to replace UIQ and you leave a big gap in the market place.

Yes !

Thanks to everyone at UIQ technology for doing the work you did, against the odds.

Whatever platform(s) we move on to from here, for many of us, UIQ will always set the benchmark.

Thank you.

Here are some screenshots from my P1i which is running the "Paris" candystripe theme. It's really beautiful and just shows how good UIQ3.3 could have been.

After a couple of days with the dreadful WM on the X1 it sickens me even more to lose UIQ

It's really sad news. I had a SE P800 for almost 3 years and it was probably one of the best phones I've ever had. Very stable (after the firmware updates), fast and configurable. UIQ could have been a true alternative to S60, WM and whatever we have today.

So, thank you UIQ team!

Thank you UIQ Team! My journey in the world of smartphones became with P900 and I enjoyed it all the way through P910, then the troublesome P990 (SE's to blame for screwing this) and finally P1i which I still keep in my drawer. I use WM now, but obviously it is not yet there where UIQ already was and I was hoping it would still set the benchmarks. Apparently it was not meant to be.

I wish all the best to the UIQ staff - I wish some or all of you land in a company that invent a brand new OS for smarties which will concur the mobile world! Smile

What have been said is all TRUE! We've been discussing what we'll have if our device fail, and so far, nothing come close (the sophistication of UI combined with simplicity/resource conservation in the background!). WM has the sophistication, but not the conservation. S60 has the conversation, but plainly DUMB UI.

As Michal said, anything bad we experience on the phone is due to SE's bad implementation, not the platform itself! Evil or Very Mad
If only UIQ is a true living being, we'll be witnessing a murder trial with SE as defendant and Motorola considered accessory to the murder ..

I wish all the team the courage and strength to go through the changes, and hopefully by this, it's going to be reborn stronger and better (your creativity will never die, you just invent something else!)

So, UIQ Team: A HUGE THANKS!
Don't give up, put your creativity and good work somewhere, anywhere. You've proven that we can have the best of the two worlds!

As user of p800, p900,p910i and p1i i really feel sad about uiq fate. uiq had everything to make it great platform, however due to confused se it could not be. i don't blame motorola much, it was more of se fault. when they discontinue the palm clie they could have easily made palm based clie oriented phone. but as a confused mind they destroyed palm now its turn of uiq.
now i use x1 , i feel its best wm phone i have ever used but it has usual wm shortcomings. had se introduced uiq with x1 hardware and spec would have been much happier, even if the same version of uiq was put in it.
anyway i thank uiq team for putting such a nice platform which we enjoyed over the years.

well, it`s so commodore`ish, that all UIQ fate... The best there is (was) is now burried alive. very sad, as i really can`t see nothing on the market as good as UIQ interface. i`ve used p800, p900, p910, p990 and p1 and i know what i`m talking/writing about: WM - resource hog, ugly and non-userfriendly, S60v5 - still miles behind (double touch to open - wooooot?).
it was a realy pleasure to use that devices and that`s because of your hard work. thank you UIQ team!

PS - what about future, are you gonna show s60v5 team how to make things right or starting a new project (i would like to see a new UIQ running on some powerfull WM device)?
