Phone: Nokia 9500 Communicator

PostPosted: Monday, 09.Nov.2009 17:31    Post subject: MMC could not be read   Reply with quote

I am using Nokia 9500. I have a Kingston 2GB MMC card which usually could be read by the Nokia 9500, but yesterday I copied some music from the computer and when I plugged it back, it is not recognized (File manager doesn't show the memcard, the Memory part on Control Panel says 'memory card is not ready'.) But it is still recognized by the card reader on the computer.

Does anyone has the same problem? And how to fix it?

Thanks.

I had this problem on a Nokia 9210 once. It wasn't a nice thing because one of the pins that touch the MMC's golden plates were dislodged, and thus the phone wasn't able to read it, showing nothing in the File Manager. The part had to be replaced.

1. One thing you could do is check with a lamp that all the pins are regularly and correctly aligned in the MMC slot, and that there are indeed the right amount of them (on my 9210 there are 6 of the pins although the MMC has 7 plates).

2. The second thing, if the pins are all right, is to format the card on the PC and check if it works on the device after that. Remember to make a backup of the files inside Wink

3. The third thing is to clean all INI files on the device. It removes every single application setting you have done, e.g. your Desk's background and zoom level and others. As before, make a backup.

4. The fourth is the most radical one; reformat the device. This removes ALL data you have on the phone. I can't stress enough of the backup thing here Smile

The two latter things are described here:
http://my-symbian.com/s80/faq/showquestion.php?fldAuto=24&faq=2

And here:
http://my-symbian.com/s80/faq/showquestion.php?faq=2&fldAuto=6

Tell me if the above don't work or if you solved it.

I think it is not because the mechanical parts (eg. the phone's MMC drive) is broken, because I plugged my spare 128MB MMC and it works like a charm.

I haven't finished backing it up. My computer's USB is USB 1.1, so even though the MMC content is around 650MB, it takes ages to move.

I am going to reformat the MMC on the 9500, is it OK?

Good to hear it's not a pin problem then Smile
Yes, you can reformat it on the 9500.

P.S. You should try backing up a 512MB MMC card full of data via an RS-232 cable which is the case for Nokia 9210 Very Happy

I have a 9500 and had the same problem. I was using a 512 MB MMC card and had switched to 2GB MMC which worked fine for sometime but was not recognised later. Just like your case, the 512 MB MMC was working fine.

I compared the thickness of both cards. The 2 MB card looked incrementally thinner. Also, the battery compartment lid was not a plane anymore after so many years of usage. So, there was not enough pressure on the MMC card housing. Thus a two-fold piece of paper put in between the MMC card housing and the lid solved my problem. May be it worths trying before deleting the ini files or reformatting.

Good luck,

A.Demir

A. Demir, the same thing happens to me. The back cover is not as tight as before, and the 2GB card is thinner. But my card works well now.

I tried to reformat it on the computer using either FAT 16 or FAT 32, but it still doesn't show up on the device. Then I reformatted the card inside the device, and everything works as charm. (I have already backed up the data, so formatting is not a 'scary' thing for me ^^

Thanks for all your support.

Eh .. are You sure 9500 is expected to be able to read 2 GB MMCs - also when there is more than 1 GB stuff there ?

I remember that when I bought my 2 GB MMC for my 9300i there was a note attached to that shelf in the store that warned that the 2 GB device works only with 9300i but not with 9300. AFAIK 9500 is of the same generation as 9300, i.e. older than 9300i.

Firmware changes between 5.22(7) and 6.27(0) (SB-035/18.10.06) :

MMC
* Improvements in contacts copy from MMC
* Memory card support up to 2GB
* Possibility to format locked MMC

The original File Manager gets slower when you have a few big files like 3gp movies but with FileNote you have no problem reaching and opening them. I do not recall 100 % if I used more than 1 GB but must be very close to it if not over.

My Nokia 9500's firmware is 4.44. It's quite fast, and I can store lots of documents and music.

I am using BestFileMan, it's faster and has more features than the original File Manager.

My tips: When you buy the memcard, let the shop assistant test for it. If it's preformatted with FAT-32 or FAT-16 it should work out of box. If it doesn't work, return it.

One more note: Format the memcard in the phone. If you format it in the computer, the computer assumes the card as a single partition - but when you format it on the phone the whole disk is formatted without any partition (sometimes called 'super floppy mode'). In Linux, this two phenomenon can be viewed easily because if a disk has a partition it will be mounted as, eample /dev/sda1, but if it doesn't have it will be mounted as /dev/sda.

How can I upgrade the firmware (without the help of Nokia's employees in the Nokia service center)? Because the upgrade cost is quite expensive (IDR 250.000 - around 28 US$).

Without a service center upgrading is next to impossible - you would have to have the right kind of cables, the firmware update program and the firmware files, and as they're all Nokia's property, you can't upgrade the firmware as you can do on the current (S60 v3 and v5) models.

So the only chance is to take it to the service center. But it sounds a lot cheaper than in Finland - over here it's about IDR 490,650 (35 €).

How about Java compatibility? Will more application became compatible in the new firmware?

I have the feeling that the problem may be related to his Kingston MMC card. I would request him to connect it to another mobile and check whether the phone detects it or not. If it is detected then the culprit most likely is his Nokia 9500. If it is not detected then he will need to reformat the MMC card.
