I've noticed that many people are not aware of it and still wait for Nokia to add the portrait mode to the built-in web browser.

However, the Midori web browser (available in Extras-Testing) fully supports the portrait mode (and uses the orientation sensor to swich) already now, thus allowing one handed web browsing on the move....

Here's a screenshot:

Michal,

How does Midori perform compared to MicroB and Firefox? Faster/Slower? Does it support flash, AJaX and the other web technologies of the mozilla codebase?

Thanks,
-Daniel

It's still in beta so it has issues.

Page rendering is actually quite fast but Flash videos are slow as hell. YouTube is actually hardly usable (like 2 fps or so). Page scrolling is also slow.

But for web browsing on the go in portrait mode, e.g. to check some news, I think it is OK until Nokia releases the firmware update with portrait support for the built-in browser...

P.S. Midori isn't Mozilla based. It is WebKit based (like the S60 browser or Safari).

No crashes in my case at all. Just very sluggish performance.
Maybe on your unit it conflicts with some other software?

xournal supports portrait mode as well.... not all that exciting, i know, but it shows that some developers are starting to support portrait.

It seems that people are now able to reliably reproduce the 'bug' that puts the N900 into portrait mode. At the very least, it serves as a proof of concept that apps can work well in this mode.

Interesting is the note that Firefox works perfectly in portrait mode.

Well, more than 3 months ago, in my N900 preview and on this forum, I wrote many times that the whole UI is actually "portrait-aware" and it's just that Nokia did not enable the built-in apps to work in it, most probably because they had no time to adjust their layouts for portrait orientation... But the platform itself DOES fully support the portrait mode, which all 3rd party developers can take full advantage of, and in upcoming firmware releases Nokia will also probably consecutively enable further built-in apps to work in portrait.

So it has been there from the beginning, only BLOCKED for most of the built-in apps, and the "bug" just unblocks them...
