the reason i need the original .qf file is because my maps will now stall at the loading screen, and a new .qf is never created. i have absolutely no idea what is going with my maps.

To make the current Ovi maps acceptable as a navigation program I think they only really need to do two things; add automatic re-routing, and offline search for addresses. So it's almost there.
Sure, the extra features of the S60 version would be nice to have, but the core features would be there. I can do without voice guidance.

I wasn't sure where to post this;

I tried using gps jinni and found it making the n900 gps much more usable in terms of getting and keeping sat lock. I like that it shows you gps satelite signal strength as well.

Ovi Maps with voice guided navigation may come to the N900, if it is easy to port from MeeGo to Maemo 5, see The Nokia Guide. Excerpt:
Is OVI Map With Voice-Guide Navigation coming To The N900?
While at Nokia World 2010 I had a little talk with the OVI product manager. One of the burning questions was whether OVI Maps with voice-guided navigation was coming to the N900. The answer was simple: they are currently focused on bringing this feature for the MeeGo platform and if the code is easily transferable/compatible with the N900, they will make the update available to the N900. If it’s something that takes huge amounts of effort to “convert” to get it working on the N900, they simply won’t do it. In short, it all depends on the compatibility and the amount of time required to transfer this to the N900.
Since both MeeGo 1.1 and Maemo 5 support the Qt framework, there should be a chance for this to happen.

If it's QT based why would it take a "huge" amount of conversion?

Hello,

I think it is quite dumb for Nokia to make a map application and then STOP when it came to add voice navigation. Obviously they knew what they were doing. Something tells me that Nokia already decided back the summer of 2009 that Meego was going to happen.

Also, I think they pretty much have planned (since then) that Meego will be compatibel with the N900 so they figured why waste time and resources to make two map applications with voice. I hope this theory is indeed true and that we will have full Meego on our handsets with it's voice guided navigation.

The Ovi Maps team apparently is working on non-Symbian versions of Ovi Maps according to the following comment on the Ovi Blog:

Whole Nokia.... Pitiful. It really deserves a comment:

1) What company are they if they DON'T KNOW how much work it takes to port THEIR OWN code from one of THEIR devices to another?

2) If Ovi Maps on Meego is Qt (and it surely is) what problems with porting it to N900 are they talking about?

3) What is with Nokia that taking their own code and porting it from one of their platforms to another (both Linux, with actually quite MINOR differences) is something that may be a problem for them, even just hypotetically? Can't they afford hiring a small team of Linux/Qt developers?

4) What level of insolence and thoughtlessness does it take to say to tens (hundreds?) of thousands of existing N900 owners that in case of a feature requested by N900 users since the first days of N900 availability (and present on every lowest-end Symbian smartphone from Nokia, costing 20x less than the N900) Nokia focuses on implementing it in a next generation device and not the one people already bought? Does it shortly translate into: "Buy the new one, dumbasses, if you want navigation"?

5) Where did the current version of Maps on the N900 actually come from? Did they initially plan to further develop it until it gets fully functional voice guided navigation but then at some point (when they started working on the N9) they just dumped it?

I must say that this is the most stupid and annoying statement I've heard from a Nokia employee for many months.

The Maemo community is stepping up with regards to Ovi Maps. Some members have figured out how to modify some core functionality of Ovi Maps and have introduced some features that have been missing including true turn-by-turn and voice guidance.

It's early in the process but looks pretty promising.

Details here:
Ovi Maps Extra Features - Now with voice guidance Beta!

Gotta love the N900!
