Seamless Software Update (SSU), is the term Nokia used to brand the over-the-air updates of Maemo.

Community Seamless Software Update (CSSU) is being developed by the Maemo community, for the Maemo community. It aims to deliver fixes which can't be delivered easily through Extras, such as core Maemo packages. It won't, however, bundle software which can be installed through the Extras repositories.

Shortly speaking, this project will deliver future (community made) firmware updates, fixes and enhancements of the platform, after Nokia stops (or already stopped) providing them to the N900.

For more details on the project and how to install it on your device, please refer to the following Wiki page:

It installed with no issues for me, but I'm left with a couple of dozen applications it suggests can be removed (which I doubt can be) and shortcutd doesn't work (which is really annoying).

Just to follow up to this - running the following code will fix shortcutd (and other keyboard shortcuts):
Code:

sudo gainroot
gconf-schemas --register hildon-desktop-keys.schemas

EDIT: Oh, and reboot afterwards

Technically, neither. It updated various of the key software packages (see here for change details).

There's not a lot of user-visible changes at the moment - the status menu in portrait mode is probably the most obvious one.

If you launch an app supporting portrait mode (e.g. the Phone app), then tap on the status bar (where the battery icon, etc. are) then you now get the status menu in portrait mode. I can't remember whether it previously didn't appear at all, or whether it just showed it as landscape mode anyway.

In the phone application, you do get the status bar in portrait mode in the stock PR 1.3 firmware.

i couldnt install it.

i have too many other customizations for now. mainly, my hildon desktop wth the maemodder and the theme customizer and swappolube. not really willing to get rid of them for it at the moment...

quite frankly, my n900 is pretty blistering the way it is....it would have to be pretty compelling at the now, in order to get me to do so. maybe allowing groups in contacts and sms....that might get me! Wink

Hi all,

I have a question. I was recently reading Thomas Perl's blog where he is discussing some upcoming changes to hildon-desktop in the CSSU.

The blog post is here:
http://thpmaemo.blogspot.com/2011/02/community-ssu-features-to-look-fo rward.html

What I am most interested in is the new rotation effect as well as the near system-wide portrait mode support (check out the YouTube videos).

Rotation Demo:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZeDI0BsoBM&feature=youtu.be

Portrait Mode Demo:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtD926wNcYs&feature=youtu.be

My question is - I have not yet upgraded to the CSSU and I was wondering how complicated it is to do so. I am not running any customized desktop patches so I don't think there will be any dependency issues.

Did anyone encounter any issues with installing?

Thanks,
-DJ

I haven't tried it yet. The changes brought with the first update weren't important enough for me. The accelerated rotation, however, would definitely be worth upgrading to the CSSU.

Regarding the system-wide portrait mode, still too many apps (at least on that demo) open in portrait while preserving the landscape layout which causes that half of the screen becomes unreachable. They need to fix it before it can be treated seriously and offered as an "upgrade"...
