New to the forum, as my quest to purchase a Nokia E90 begins.

As most people know, when the E90 was initially released, it had a few issues (microphone, keyboard, etc.). As far as I know, most of the design issues were corrected and a second (V2) version of the E90 was released. Excluding the keypad update, which made all keys level (ala Nokia 9300), are there any other visual cues (labeling, model numbers, IMEI, etc.) that I could look for in determining which version of the E90 I would be purchasing.

Welcome to the forum!

As far as I remember, there was no apparent indication/model number/product code, etc. of the new version. So if you basically see that the keyboard is flat then it's the newer version, and that's it. I guess that the new version could be distinguished also by IMEI, but I doubt anyone knows which number it started from...

In addition, the latest version of the E90 has the "NR 14" designation printed on the circuit board, see the following link:

http://www.mobilegazette.com/nokia-e90-long-term-test-08x01x16.htm

E90s with "NR 11", "NR 12" and "NR 14" have been reported on this forum.

Wow, I didn't know that. I had three or four N900s but I never checked that number.

You're absolutely right. The old keyboard was much better to use.

I own two E90-1 . Both with motherboard nr 14 . Still prefer the one with the old keyboard . However kb touches the internal screen , there is no problem for readability at all . Despite the stripes , which are only visible under certain external light conditions .
BTW : the older device has a much whiter screen , while the newer sreen is yellowish .

Just started up my E90 after some weeks with N8 and my E90 feels new again Smile Love this dual screen, clamshell design! I really hope this isn't the last Communicator!

Thanks for the feedback. Though my 9300 has served me well for years, I'm looking forward to cornering a black E90 (eBay, Amazon, etc.). Though the new keypad eliminates the need for a screen protector, labeling it an 'improvement' depends on the user.

@jApi NL - Does brightening the display help at all, or does the yellowish tint of the LCD hamper the visual?

There is no hampering the visual . There is clearly a glow difference : like xenon (white-blue) and halogen (white-yellow) lights of today's cars .
As far as I know the black and also red E90's come with the flat kb , while the mocca comes with both kb's , depending on date of production .
I prefer the old kb : easier typing experience . Still using it everyday - now typing on it - since nov 17th , 2007 . No screen protection ever used . Screen is like new . Stripes can only be seen in e.g. mirroring sunlight . So it's a minor issue .
The outer screen is much more scratch sensible , due to it's position in pockets , bags etc . Therefore I use a simple slide-in spectacles case for protection .

Success !
