my batteries started only lasting 1.5-3 hours in the last 3 weeks, so i just purchased 4 new batteries.

my device did not used to get so hot, so i figured the batteries were just getting bad. now i have used a new battery and it is still getting really hot.

anyone have any ideas as to what may be running, or how to check what could be using so much power?

i used to get 4-6 hours per battery.

Usually the N900 gets hot when the CPU is pegged at 100% (which will also cause very quick battery drain). Launch X-Terminal and run 'top' then press 'P' to sort by CPU usage and check to see how much of the CPU is being used.

here is a screen shot.

looks that /usr/lib/tracker/tracker-index is a culprid. 60+% cpu

any way to shut it down, or is it totally necessary?

althought, leaving a few items open in the background...

i also get:

/usr/libexec/hildon-thumbnailerd ---- very high....between 60-86%cpu
/usr/bin/Xorg -logfile /tmp/Xorg ---- between 2-13%cpu

Tracker is the program that interrogates and indexes all of your music and video files. It (along with hildon-thumbnailer) will also index images.

The hildon-thumbnailer daemon gets stuck from time to time requiring a kill to resolve. It used to happen to me all of the time before PR1.3. Now it rarely happens. Not sure if it was a software fix or if I am just lucky.

From teminal:
killall hildon-thumbnailerd

Xorg usage (the Maemo GUI subsystem) is normal.

thanks.

so i killed it already..no problem.

i am going to start tracking my battery usage...here is what i have for the last bettery.

1250-1446pm
1:20 of talktime
data is connected to hspa the whole time...keeps my google voice connected.
2 sms

dead at 14:46

that was the second battery for the day. the first one i took off the charger at 1030 and it died at 1250...but didnt take any stats. can tell you though that i hardly used the phone at all! Shocked

i would like to figure out why i am killing batteries so much now...it is like trying to carry an iphone...always having to charge....even though i am bringing 3 batteries with me.

100% CPU usage is like straight talk time + data usage together so you can see how it will drain a battery quickly.

There is an app for tracking the battery usage (battery monitor or something similar) that will show you how the battery is discharging over time. May be worth running so you can see key points and times where your battery just loses power.

ceroberts,

Install BatteryGraph and see what happens.

Also check what is the maximum capacity (in mAh) when the battery is fully charged and compare it to the original capacity written on the battery - if the difference is big it may happen that the battery is already worn out.

The battery that I got with the N900 after 1 year or so could only be recharged to about 800-900 mAh, i.e. about 25% less than originally.

I found that when browser loads and connection to 3.5G is unstable, it also gets very hot. Especially if the phone is 'forced' always stay on 3G and not dual.

what firmware are you on?

please upgrade to PR1.3 if you are still on 1.2. there's something logged in bugzilla that sounds similar to what you're experiencing:
