Hi,

I saw the use of foursquare by a mate yesterday on his Android so now I was checking the web for a good N900 app for that.

I found FourCircle: http://my-maemo.com/software/applications.php?name=FourCircle&fldAuto= 2228&faq=37

I will try that one but I saw there are some other apps aswell, Barriosquare, Cotchin!, nelisquare, ... what is the best to use?
Has somebody experience with it?

While I am not a fan of the 'I'm not home - please rob me' apps, I hear that Zaploc is pretty good (new and maintained).

I see your point Danny and indeed, I'm aware of that too.
but my postal address and even my cellphone number isn't on the web all the way in the open. I google my name and nickname often
and of top of that my parents are always at home, or at least a lot.

I'm trying the fourcircle app and it is quite good, the barriosquare I tried aswell but is already deleted again. Will give the zaploc a try now.

I've used all of the 4square apps on the N900 and pound for pound, I like nelisquare the best. It's not perfect, but it's faster then most and replicates the look and feel of Foursquare applications found on other platforms very well.

Most importantly, nelisquare is still being supported by the developer so it uses the new API's and will continue to function after the back end switchover on August 1st, which is more then can be said for some other apps like Barriosquare.

Nelisquare indeed is a good app, but I had some issues after the installation. I found the solution on the maemo.org forum but I will post it here for other users to help out.

So I installed nelisquare and executed it, but I saw the screen flash a few times and stayed black.
The fact is that I needed to install/update my dependencies, so make sure you have the install catalogue http://wiki.maemo.org/Extras-devel

went to the x-terminal and entered:
Quote:

sudo gainroot
apt-get install libqtm-11
y

and it started with installing a lot of stuff, afterwards I tried running Nelisquare again and it went without problem.

What do you mean with August 1st? What will happen?

On August 1st, Foursquare will stop supporting the protocols used under the original Foursquare APIs, and will only work against the new Foursquare 2.0 back end API protocols. After the 1st, if you haven't re-written your Foursquare app to use the new API's, you probably won't be able to connect.

http://blog.programmableweb.com/2011/07/15/time-to-update-those-foursq uare-apps-api-v1-goes-dead-august-1st/

I saw a warning on my friend's N8 that the Symbian foursquare app that he had would not work after August 1st. Didn't have a chance to check for an update on that one from Nokia.

But I do know that Barriosquare won't work since the developer mentioned on talk.maemo.org that his school work was preventing him from continuing support of the app.
