This probably means that the Nokia N9 will not follow the same system for firmware upgrades as the Nokia N900. It could mean that firmware upgrades will be operator and/or country dependent as for Symbian phones.

The firmware PR1.1 update to N9 phones has started to be rolled out over the air, see N9 Developer blog post. Excerpt:
N9 over the air software update rollout started
We have started rolling out the PR1.1 update to N9 phones over the air. This update brings the N9 software to effectively same level as is currently available for the Nokia N950 device (details).

The first regions and operators have already been targeted, with others to follow in the coming days. So do not despair, if the update is not yet available for your phone.

    The changes and improvements include:

    • NFC tag reading
    • Music controls on lock screen
    • Photo and video shooting with colour filters
    • More powerful multitasking
    • Swype for faster typing
    • Faster MfE, syncing only the active folders
    • Noise cancellation reduces background noise so your friends hear you better
    • Swipe down to close apps easily; now on by default
    • New notifications for the standby screen, such as charging and calendar
    • Multiple smaller improvements to operating system

Please accept also the application updates available to make most of your new update. To check for updates on your phone, select Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Manage applications.

Nokia N9 firmware update 20.2011.40-4 aka PR1.1 is out:

http://My-MeeGo.com/?p=7749

----

Sadly, it looks that I am going to have exactly the same problem with this OTA update as with PR1.1 update on the N950: after downloading everything, the actual update process gets stuck at 0% and after some 10-15 minutes it quits with "Update failed" error message.

On the N950, the only way to make the update work was to wipe the device clean, so it looks that I will have to do the same thing on the N9 Sad Apparently, some 3rd party software (or maybe some setting) blocks the update, and as it is hard to find which exactly software (or setting) does it, clearing the whole device seems to be the only way out...

From the blog post I quoted above:

You just have to wait a few days before the update becomes available.

I doubt your location has anything to do with it. Update availability is based on product code, not IP address. And AFAIK there is no product code for the USA - you probably have an "imported" unit with some European, Asian or whatever product code...

I'd suggest doing the following: reboot the phone, go to Settings / Applications / Manage applications / Updates tab, tap on Refresh button, wait a little bit (mine also showed 'No updates' at first but then after one or two minutes the notification appeared).

Mine also showed no updates, but then after few seconds pr 1.1 + many other updates popped to list.

Updated without any problems. At least navigation opens now a lot quicker when I click an address from calendar.

Use Nokia Software Updater to update for Malaysia and Singapore. It works.

If I install different firmware, i.e. a different regions firmware to my device, will it wipe the applications I have installed and force me to reinstall?

I'm asking because I'm with Vodafone in Australia, and the update still isn't available. I know that with my old N8 I never got Anna because Vodafone couldn't be bothered with releasing it (apparently adding their [put your favorite swearword here] to the OS is too much effort) and I was stuck with the original firmware for that device.

I'm hoping that isn't the case again here because I really want the new features of PR1.1, so yeah, I'll hold out a little while longer but if someone could let me know if putting on a new region firmware screws up installed stuff that'd be great.

Thanks in advance.

I've been refreshing mine for the last 20 minutes now - so far nothing! It's probably my country. I'm in China, but purchased mine through Expansys in Hong Kong, and I'm not really sure which variation of the phone I have.

Flashing *always* wipes the device, no matter if the firmware is for your region or for some other region. The whole rootfs gets erased and reprogrammed, and that's where 3rd party applications are stored.

The only case where user content is preserved is an OTA (Over-The-Air) firmware update, which does not flash firmware, but installs/replaces individual packages.

In case of the N8, you can also change the Product code (using e.g. Nemesis Software Suite) and flash it with unbranded firmware (using e.g. Nokia Software Updater).

Check the product code - it'll tell you which variant you have (see Bent's list above).
