Nokia has announced KOffice viewers for Maemo 5, i.e. for the Nokia N900, see blog post at Trolltech, a Nokia subsidiary. Excerpt:
Office viewer for Maemo5 based on KOffice
KOffice2 is still a fresh set of office tools. We released the 2.0, called platform release, just 3 months ago and work continues to make the suite more stable and to add the minimum set of features people should be able to expect.

All KOffice community members are continuing to do an awesome job with many bugs being closed and lots of love going into all the applications. This means that the 2.1 release will already be much closer to being ready for the big crowds.

We got a little help now too. Nokia has packaged KOffice for Maemo 5 environment with a new UI for Maemo 5!, This means that KOffice can run in the new Maemo device(N900) . Just to clarify, this is not a commercial product of Maemo but is a contribution by Nokia to Open Source. The developed application will be made available for download in a typical release-early release-often. Bugs will likely exist in this version.

This is exciting news as KOffice will be available to a huge audience and Nokia has been helping to fix bugs and make MS-Office document support more robust.

Nokia has created a document viewer for the Maemo 5 platform (Fremantle) based on KOffice and uses the KWord and KPresenter applications to load and display word processor and presentation documents. The application uses a custom user interface specifically designed to fit in with the Maemo 5 style.

Part of the projects goals is to help KOffice mature its loading and rendering of MSOffice documents.

It is important to point out that all contributions to KOffice have been made directly inside the KOffice subversion repository. The KOffice document viewer for Maemo 5 will be shown for the first time at Maemo Summit in Amsterdam between October the 9th and 11th. This release is a bit unfortunately timed as the official KOffice2.1 release will likely be one or two weeks later making the Fremantle office use the release candidate at first.

I think its very exciting to have the hard work of all the KOffice community members be rewarded by having the document reader be based on our hard work. I’m very thankful to be working on the project and I’m looking forward to continued cooperation between Nokia and the KOffice community.

Suresh Chande at Nokia has a KOffice demo for Maemo 5, see this blog post. Excerpt:
Mobile Office based on KOffice for Maemo 5
Just made a presentation and demo of KOffice for Maemo 5 UI. Here is the video of the KOffice running on Maemo 5. This Office UI will be open sourced and will be available for download from Maemo extras-devel respository soon. The Office UI developed for Maemo 5 will be open sourced and if you want to contribute join us at maemo.gitorious.org to mature this application for making it end user ready and if you are interested to improve the core of the Office Engine join the KOffice community.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AgJBEo4DD4

The KOffice supports ODF and MS Office formats. The basically means that KOffice on Maemo 5 benefits from this and hence we have the first ODF complaint Office viewer which can also handle MS Office formats.

Nokia has released an alpha version of FreOffice for Maemo 5, see this blog post. Excerpt:
Alpha version of Office Viewer for Nokia N900 available
Today, Nokia released the first public version of the office document viewer for the Nokia N900 phone. It was uploaded to the Maemo repositories. This version supports text files, spreadsheets and presentations in OpenDocument format (ODF) and Microsoft Office formats. The viewer requires the latest update (PR1.1) to the N900 software. You can install 'Office Viewer' by adding the maemo-devel repository to your N900 catalogues:

    Catalog name:
      Maemo Extras-devel
    Web address:
      http://repository.maemo.org/extras-devel
    Distribution:
      fremantle
    Components:
      free

Then the application 'freoffice' will be available in the category 'Office'. The install is 9 megabytes.

With the viewer, you can open multiple files at once, open office documents from your e-mail, search in office files and copy and paste from your documents. A very nice feature is the ability to give presentations with the phone. Here are some screen shots of the viewer running on the N900.

The code for this viewer is available in the KOffice repository. New releases of the viewer will be uploaded to the repository as KOffice progresses towards version 2.2.

The viewer has a simple user interface and responds quickly to user input such as page changing and scrolling.

You probably need to enable all repositories mentioned on Maemo Extras, Extras-Devel, Extras-Testing: why, what for, especially "Extras-Testing".

FreOffice still only has simple support for Microsoft Office, whereas Documents To Go has had Microsoft Office 2003 and 2007 support for a long time. It is likely Documents To Go in Maemo 5 version will be able edit Office documents much sooner than FreOffice.

FreOffice, however, can view OpenDocument format (ODF) now and some time in the future also edit such documents.

So if you need to view Office documents on the phone as part of your work, Documents To Go is still the way to go, in my opinion.

KOffice.org has released KOffice 2.2 beta 1, see:

http://www.koffice.org/news/koffice-2-2-beta-1/

Nokia has sponsered some of the development. We are likely to see this appearing on the N900 at some point.

My N900 became too "stuffed" and therefore unresponsive (hanging virtual keyboard, MicroB not responding, etc.) so I reinstalled the PR 1.2 via NSU.

Now the problem is that when I installed latest KOffice it crashes at starting.
Do you guys have any idea why is that so? 8 didn't install any potentially conflicting apps like docs to go or abiword.

New plug-ins have been released for FreOffice.

FreOffice Blog Plugin, FOBlog, allows posting to Wordpress and Blogger blogs, see blog post. Excerpt:
    FreOffice Blog Plugin - FOBlog
Finally! The blog plugin is almost ready for use. Only one big bug remains. More about the bug later.

The FreOffice Blog plugin (FOBlog), enables blogging to Wordpress and Blogger blogs from within FreOffice. What makes it different from other blogging tools, is that it extracts content from an already existing ODT file and posts it to the blog. A nice user interface is provided to make things easier for the user as well. All the user needs to do is,

1.Create a new document in FreOffice
    2. Save the document
    3. Open the blog plugin.
    4. Click on New Post
    5. Select the ODT file and enter required details.
    6. Click on post.
    7. Done!!

The blog plugin opens the file, extracts its content, uploads images if any and then posts it to the blog. This post, was done from the plugin itself.

The features supported by FOBlog are.

    1. Posting to WordPress & Blogger platforms.
    2. Image support for both Wordpress & Blogger
    3. Support for multiple accounts on either platform.
    4. Encrypted storage of user details. This is shared with the online services plugin.

There are some shortcomings as well. FOBlog does not retain most of the formatting of the text in document. And also there is the big bug I mentioned earlier. All the images in a document, no matter where they occur in the document, appear at the top. As they have in this post.

Barring those short comings, FOBlog is ready for use. Look for it in a few days in the maemo repositories.
See also this blog post and blog post.

Translation Plugin has been released and allows translation of text in 58 languages with 108 languages planned, see blog post (in German).

Does this conflict with docs to go? - I get an error messgae - "Unable to install 'FreOffice'"
Extras, extras-testing and extras-devel enabled
Tried to install it again and the download size looks suspect only 414kb - could it be only the upgrade is in the repository?
