I've ported SunCalc to Jolla's Sailfish OS.

Porting was effortless - no changes in the actual application code at all, only some minor UI tweaks due to some QML elements (Nokia's Qt components specific) missing in Jolla's Silica, including e.g. Tumbler, ButtonRow, etc. Also, due to lack of toolbar on Sailfish OS, the tool buttons and menus had to be replaced with pull down (Pulley) and push up menus.

SunCalc running in the Qt Creator's Sailfish OS Emulator on Ubuntu 12.10:

StarFinder and MoonCalc will be ported next.

Well, given the recent news about them planning to release the first Sailfish OS smartphone only around Christmas 2013, and even that only in Finland and China with the rest of the world not even being mentioned at the moment (but surely not earlier than Q2 2014 i.e. more than a year from now), I am not sure if there's much reasons to hurry, unless we want to have yet another lifeless site...

It's great to see that porting an application to Sailfish OS is so easy. I think that the owners of the N9 also will benefit from Sailfish OS. Native applications, made for Sailfish OS, can also be easily ported to MeeGo. The N9 has future because of Jolla and Sailfish. What are your first impressions Michal? By the way I donated $15 dollar this week.

In some cases (e.g. when only the standard QML elements are used, without the platform specific components) no porting is needed at all, only rebuilding & repackaging (deb -> rpm)...

That's right! Porting apps from Jolla to Harmattan will actually be as easy as in the reverse direction. So the N9 can get new apps in the future thanks to Jolla...

P.S. Thank you very much for your $15 donation! Your Site Supporter rank is now active.

SunCalc is a paid app, so I can't share the code. The Harmattan version is available in the Ovi Store and the Sailfish OS version will be available from a Jolla app store (if they have one). I may decide to make the source code available at some point, but in case of the Sailfish OS version not before I can test it on a real hardware and make sure it works perfectly. In the SDK Emulator one cannot test certain things, like e.g. GPS or sensors.
