Hi all,

I started a new tech blog called #VintageTech. My first post is about the first smartphone I owned (and really the first smartphone); the Nokia 9000i. I pulled it out of storage and did an unboxing and walk-through of the device and OS.

Anyone who wants to see where it all began or who is interested in this unique device may want to check it out.

Comments always welcome.

Thanks,
-DJ

The most amazing thing is that it could do all those things with its 25 MHz 386 CPU and 2 MB RAM while now many smartphones struggle to work smoothly on multiple cores @ >1 GHz and gigabytes of RAM Very Happy

GEOS was always lightweight and was able to run well on most PC hardware. What I found interesting is that when I powered up the phone, the battery took a charge despite not being used for well over a decade, all of my data was still on the phone, and it just seemed to work. Granted it wasn't the fastest experience but it was acceptable.

Nokia really did know how to make them back in the day Very Happy

I recently found deep in a drawer my trusty 7650 (the first Series 60 phone). Not as old as the 9000i but still some 13 years or so. Guess what, it also charged without any problems and then turned on with all data still there, as if I switched it off only a few hours ago. Only the clock needed adjustment.

Those were rock solid devices.

Elop (and those pricks at Nokia who conspired with him) should be eternally condemned for destroying such a company. Meeting them on the street, people should be rushing to the other sidewalk.
