Java support in 9210i
It seems that Java support in 9210i will be truly better than in 9210. This is because Nokia is going to put the whole Java Runtime in Application memory (firmware), which means that it will be executed in place (XIP) and will not take RAM memory upon execution. In 9210 Java Runtime loads into RAM and takes about 2 MB of it, leaving someting like 1,5 MB free for the actual Java application.

9210 vs. 9210i
Posted by Michal Jerz @ 16:21 in category
Nokia 9210i
Today Nokia has announced a brand new member of the Communicator family - Nokia 9210i Communicator.

N9210i features:
- enhanced internal memory (disk C: ) - 16 MB istead of 4 MB
- no MMC card bundled (64 MB card available as an accessory)
- still 8 MB of operating memory (SDRAM)
- web browser supporting JavaScript
- Macromedia Flash 5 player
- RealOne player supporting streaming audio and video contents
- enhanced security with Virtual Private Network (VPN) capability
- HTML 4.01 compatibility
- Cascade Style Sheet

Nokia 9210i Communicator has an enhanced design with silver-colored number keys on the front. Other security enhancements available for the Nokia 9210i Communicator include the memory card lock, which prevents unauthorized access to the memory card. N9210i can be enhanced with attachable Nokia GPS module optimized for N9210i.

Nokia 9210i will be available in Q2 2002. Press release: Full description:

Our comments: "enhanced memory" in 9210i means nothing more than 16 MB disk C: There is still 8 MB of operating memory (SDRAM)! And bigger C: memory was implemented at cost of no MMC card, which can be purchased as an accessory! Summa summarum 9210i has 4 MB of disk memory less...

This new model may be a good choice for new customers but means almost nothing for current 9210 users. Bigger C: disk is nothing special as one can use disk D: (MMC) in 9210 to install applications instead of C: Flash memory on MMC is a little bit slower than internal Flash memory but that's the only difference...

New software can be installed in 9210, too. Some of the features (like new WWW browser with Javascript and Flash support) can be implemented in 9210 by a firmware upgrade (although I am sure that Nokia will forbid this - you will have to find some "friendly" service to do this for you).

To recap: no GPRS, no Bluetooth, no bigger RAM. Only cosmetic additions like silver keys instead of grey ones. Most of the 9210i features should have been available as an upgrade for N9210 if not present in 9210 from the beginning (Javascript support and streaming Real contents were advertised as main 9210 features before it was launched but then 'disappeared'). Just like "memory card protection" (available via Tools menu in File Manager which can be seen on screenshots in 3.18 and 3.54 user manuals but not in the device).

Again: for new customers N9210i will be a good choice. But all current 9210 users can sleep well (dreaming about GPRS, Bluetooth and bigger RAM).
