Q1 2005 Canalys report available
Symbian's overall share of the worldwide smart mobile device market rose above 60%, from around 40% a year earlier. Despite increasing activity among Asian licensees of the OS, the proportion of shipments accounted for by Nokia remains very high at 82%. Microsoft's overall market share of the worldwide mobile market is now 18,3% (was 23,1%).

Facilitated by its two screens, the Nokia N90 features two ergonomic modes for instant photo and video capture. New Nokia N70 - the smallest 3G Series 60 phone

Nokia today introduced the Nokia N70, a beautifully designed, compact and easy-to-use 3G smartphone with versatile mobile photography, personal productivity and entertainment features. Incorporating a complete smartphone feature set, as well as a 2 megapixel camera, flash and front camera for video calling, the Nokia N70 comes fully equipped with stereo FM radio, a digital music player and new 3D games.

The slide and shoot design makes mobile photography fast and simple. The rear camera slide reveals and automatically activates the 2 megapixel camera, ready to instantly shoot photos or video. The intuitive slide is complemented with an integrated flash, 20x zoom capability and a range of capture scene settings for optimizing image quality in various environments, including Scenery, Portrait, Night, and Sports. Furthermore, the dedicated shutter key on the side of the phone enables users to capture images like they would with a regular camera, allowing for greater stability and ease of use. The N70 is based on Series 60 2nd Edition, Feature Pack 3 (Symbian OS 8.1a).

The phone is expected in Q3 2005 with an EDGE variant available later.

Johan Frank has released an updated version of Quirc, an IRC-client for UIQ phones written in Personal Java. What's new:

* Changed the .sis file so the PX00-specific quirc.dll is not installed for other platforms
* Nick list now allows double-tapping on nicks to open a Query window directly
* Multi-command aliases, use | as separator
* Added "Don't send on enter" option for people who constantly type enter by mistake while using cicjot
* Removed the silly "short timestamp" option (still available in quirc.conf in case someone actually used it)
* Removed unused "email address" setting
* Added UTF8 support
* Added option to "detect" and decode UTF8 sequences for scandinavian characters while using ISO-8859-1/CP1252
* Added "hide ping? pong!" setting
* Misc minor fixes and improvements.

Yahoo! goes mobile on Nokia's S60 smartphones
Nokia and Yahoo! today announced an agreement that allows Nokia Series 60 smartphone users to stay informed, entertained and in touch through Yahoo!'s internet services. Yahoo! data communications services such as e-mail, Yahoo! entertainment services such as ring tones, wallpapers and downloadable games and Yahoo! Search for Mobile, will be the first set of services available through Nokia devices based on Series 60. The first Nokia devices with Yahoo! internet services are the Nokia 6680, Nokia 6681 and the Nokia 6630. More devices will be announced on April 27. Two new freeware games for UIQ from AnotherGuest
Another Guest / SomeOne has ported two new freeware games to the UIQ platform. Dynamate is an orginal puzzler by Jonas Norberg where you have to match R,G,B balls with eachother. Tickypip is a NetWalk clone by Christian Hammond released under GPL. Tickypip is every network administrator's worst nightmares brought to your PDA. You must complete every level by connecting all computers to the main server. The network, however, is horribly fractured, and it may take some creativity and patience to solve some puzzles.
