Ovi Suite 3.0 released
They promised it'd come in 2010 and they kept their promise :-) Ovi Suite 3.0 has been moved out of beta stage to "public" release today, on December 31st. This new version improves Maps and Music functions and offers numerous bug fixes and visual improvements.

DVBMonitor - public transport schedule for Dresden
DVBMonitor by Nano is a schedule for public transport in Dresden and Umland (Germany). The program shows in how many minutes the next train or bus comes to the selected station. It also supports GPS to show you train/bus stations nearby, or you can select them manually. Written in Qt Mobility, separate versions for Symbian ^1 (S60 5th Edition) and Symbian ^3 are available.

Opera Mobile 10.1 for Symbian updated
Today Opera released a "silent" update for Opera Mobile 10.1 for Symbian/S60. The update specifically addressed a few critical issues discovered on Symbian^3 devices. Changes include:

* Predictive text can be activated while writing password
* Fixed crashing when typing in password dialog using Sougou keyboard
* Fixed crashing when using predictive text and system keyboard
* Fixed issues with spelling keyboard not disappearing
* Fixed issues with backspace deleting all text in edit field when text isn't selected
* Fixed bug where previous virtual key searches do not highlight correctly.

Symbian Foundation websites closed today
Most of Symbian Foundation websites closed today as a step in the transition to licencing-only organisation. The most important content (SDKs, OS source code, documentation, etc.) can still be obtained (until March 31, 2011) via FTP.

From now on, the Symbian OS will be further developed by Nokia who confirmed their full committment to Symbian and focus on Qt and HTML5 for application development across both Symbian and MeeGo. More on the Nokia's Symbian blog.

Nokia Bots beta updated for Symbian^3
Nokia Bots has been updated for Symbian^3 phones (the N8, C6-01 and the C7). is a collection of add-ons that autonomously learn your personal preferences, and improve user experience with new, customized features and tricks. These add-ons, or Bots, observe how the phone is being used and automatically configure and activate themselves, if customization seems relevant. Nokia Bots is also compatible with S60 5th Edition phones supporting home screen widgets (N97, N97 Mini and the C6-00).

Nokia E7 delayed until early 2011
According to Reuters, the Nokia E7 has been delayed until early 2011 "to ensure the best possible user experience on the E7". As the N8 was also delayed, E7's delay does not surprise much, but it surely does not help Nokia regain its market position... There's no news about the Meego based N9, either.

Pebol Beach - new free S60 game from Nokia
Nokia has released a free game called Pebol Beach. adapts the gameplay of artillery-type games to create a more family-friendly beach soccer session. You choose the angle and force of your kick in the hope of delivering it safely to your fellow player on the other side of the dunes. A changeable wind means there isn't a single correct way to do this. The game can be played by one or two people, using the same device.

Proximity Touch Button for S60
Proximity Touch Button from CrazyUP is a useful software that allows you to make better use of the proximity sensor of the phone. In fact, the sensor will turn into a virtual key which can perform several actions based on the user's choice:

Skype client now available for Symbian^3
Even though I've never really had any issues with the S60 5th Edition of Skype on my N8, it is worth noticing that a dedicated Symbian^3 version of the Skype client has just appeared, offering improved user interface and the SILK codec for better call quality. The announcement can be found here. In order to install Skype on your Symbian^3 device, go to skype.com/m using your phone's web browser.

YouTube client for Symbian^3 released
YouTube has released a Symbian^3 compatible client (v2.4.10). Among other improvements, this version seems to be taking advantage of Symbian^3 devices' (e.g. N8's) higher performance by providing higher quality video stream. The software can be installed by going to http://m.google.com with the built-in browser and then selecting the language version.

Mail for Exchange 3.0 for 5800 Xpress Music, X6 and 5530
Mail for Exchange 3.0 has been released for the 5800 XM, X6 and the 5530, see Nokia Software Update News. Mail for Exchange enables you to use the email, contacts, calendar entries and tasks of your Microsoft Exchange Server account on your mobile phone. In order to install, go to Menu > Applications > SW Update.

Nokia Diagnostics updated for S60 5th Edition
Nokia Beta Labs has updated Nokia Diagnostics, see this blog post.

The new version, optimized for S60 5th Edition devices, contains more extensive set of tests to help you to figure out where the problem may be. New version also contains the advanced mode functionality for techie users and possibility to run all tests or all subcategory of tests. The look and feel has also been improved.

New version contains following tests: Vibrating alert, Memory, Battery charger, Memory card, Cameras, Keypad, Screen, USB cable, Web browser, Network coverage, Data coverage, GPS, Earpiece, Microphone, Loudspeaker, Headset.

For Symbian^3 users there will be an S^3 version soon. Nokia Diagnostics can be downloaded here.

Nokia: MeeGo will not displace Symbian as enterprise OS
Nokia has said it will stick with Symbian as its main business-phone platform even when MeeGo, the handset-maker's new top-end operating system, is released.

Ovi Maps 3.06 Beta released
Nokia Beta Labs have released an update to Ovi Maps 3.06 Beta providing the following enhancements:

* Download street maps directly to your device. A new feature called "Update" on the main menu which allows you download Street Maps directly (via WiFi) to your phone without a PC.

* My Position and Search are now integrated (now called Map). When accessed, it will show your last map view.

* Back button in Favourites

* Long tap functionality to delete & rename collections & routes.

* Pop up for first time use – to inform user to download new map data (when upgrading 3.04 > 3.06 for the first time).

* Improved behaviours of transit lines settings in map toolbox (no more grey out).

* Compass calibration hint.

* Refreshed place details information view

This version supports Symbian^3 and S60 5th Edition devices. You can get it from Nokia Beta Labs.
