Symbian OS source code published
Nokia has uploaded almost all of the source code for the Symbian OS to collab.symbian.nokia.com. The few remaining source files, tools and documents will be uploaded over the next few weeks. Through these pages you will find source code, platform development tools, documents and other support materials. The Symbian platform source is a snapshot of Nokia's most recent master code base.

Nokia will no longer refer to official releases as Symbian ^3 or Symbian^4, but will deliver continuous evolution of the platform to partners and customers – including consumers. In line with this approach there are no software builds, but build tools through this website, and a SDK through Forum Nokia.

Nokia Diexie - innovative Chinese input technology
Nokia Research Center in Beijing has just released Nokia Diexie (the official name means "overlapping handwriting"), a beta application for Chinese speakers around the world to write sentences in Chinese on their touchscreen phones naturally - without having to pause between characters.

What makes Nokia Diexie unique is that it was designed specifically for smaller touchscreen phones where writing out a full sentence just won't fit on the limited real estate. Nokia Diexie allows users to simply write a full sentence one character over another in a stacking style. As you begin writing the next character over the previous character, the previous character begins to fade away, creating an overlapped visual, allowing you to concentrate on finishing the next character.

After you finish recording, you can quickly browse through your video's scenes by simply clicking on the pre-organized scene frames located on the left side of the screen. Nokia Shoot & Tag is an evolution of the Nokia Video Cuts gallery application also available from Nokia Beta Labs.

Nokia reaffirms its commitment to Symbian
Nokia reinforced its commitment to its Symbian platform on Wednesday, easing concerns it could face an awkward gap until the launch of new products under its planned Microsoft venture. The comments on Symbian from a Nokia executive on Wednesday helped lift the Finnish mobile phone maker's shares above recent lows to trade up 2.3 percent at 6.20 euros by 1255 GMT. The STOXX Europe 600 technology index .SX8P was up 0.4 percent.

The comments also offset an admission from Nokia's telecom gear venture with Siemens, Nokia Siemens Networks, that its $1.2 billion acquisition of Motorola's network unit would be delayed further due to an extended review by Chinese authorities.

Symbian is due to be replaced by Microsoft's Windows Phone over the coming two years under a plan announced in February, raising concerns over what Nokia would do with its existing product lines in the meantime.

"We will of course utilise the long tail of Symbian as long as it gives us a profitable margin," Nokia Chief Financial Officer Timo Ihamuotila told a technology conference organised by Switzerland's UBS. He noted a final contract with Microsoft was yet to be signed. Ihamuotila said the so-called long tail in phone sales, when volumes are lower than after launch, has often lasted longer than expected in the mobile industry.

Industry watchers said it was important for Nokia to manage the transition to new Microsoft-based products. "Symbian faces similar challenges to Mark Twain, whose death was famously announced prematurely," said Ben Wood, head of research at British consultancy CCS Insight. "Nokia must come out with a strong message that its legacy smartphone platform is alive and well as sales of Symbian devices are going to be critical for the next 18 months," Wood said.

Digia acquires Qt commercial licensing business from Nokia
Digia Plc. has signed an agreement with Nokia to acquire the Qt commercial licensing and services business. Through the proposed acquisition, around 3500 desktop and embedded customer companies from various industries are targeted to be transferred to Digia. The transaction is expected to be closed by the end of March 2011. Nokia will continue to invest in future development of Qt for the benefit of all users, both Commercial and LGPL.

As a result, the commercial licensing and service operations business is to be run by Digia, with existing and new commercial customers, who will benefit from the continuity of development of desktop and embedded Qt functionality and new service models. Building on Digia's leading Qt expertise, this acquisition further accelerates Digia's direction towards international, product based business and significantly widens Digia's Qt customer base. To further strengthen its global presence, Digia will establish subsidiaries in USA and Norway as part of the transaction.

Qt SDK 1.1 beta available
Nokia has released today Qt SDK 1.1 beta. With Qt 4.7.2 a lot of improvements and fixes for Qt Quick have been published. Qt Mobility 1.1.1 includes updates for the supported platforms. Qt Creator 2.1 will allow you to create and design your QML applications from within the IDE nicely.

What was missing so far was a nice and convenient way to get the whole package, namely the SDK. Now it's here.

The Qt SDK 1.1 beta is available now. The Qt SDK fills the gap between the Nokia Qt SDK, which provided a development environment for mobile targets, and the Qt Desktop SDKs. This allows you to develop applications for all platforms, which Qt supports. Compared to the Technology Preview a significant amount of updates has been included, namely:

  • Qt 4.7.2 for Symbian ^1 and Symbian ^3

  • Qt 4.7.2 for the Desktop

  • Qt 4.7.2 for the Qt Simulator

  • Qt Mobility 1.1.1 for Symbian^1, Symbian^3 and the Qt Simulator

  • Qt Creator 2.1 final

  • Qt Simulator 1.1 beta

  • Updates to the Symbian Complementary package, providing the toolchain and build tools for the Symbian platforms.

For the Linux and Mac platforms, SIS packages for Symbian have also been added, so that developers using the Remote Compiler can install Qt from their development host of choice as well. A full changelog is located in the installation package.

You can download the packages on the Forum Nokia pages.

Qt 4.7.2 released
Qt 4.7.2 has now been released. This is a maintenance release which contains bug-fixes based on feedback and contributions since the Qt 4.7.1 release back in November. It also marks the official release of Qt Quick.

Qt Quick is a new feature within Qt that makes it easy to create light-weight apps and UIs. It contains the new QML language, the Qt Declarative module, and new tooling in Qt Creator to easily build apps.

Packages are available from the Qt Download page, and for those who prefer to get it directly from the public git repository at http://qt.gitorious.org, there will be a "v4.7.2" tag soon.

Qt Quick 1.0 officially launched
Nokia has launched Qt Quick 1.0 today. Qt Quick is a collection of three technologies:

* QtDeclarative - the native library in Qt delivering native integration and the Qt Quick UI runtime
* QML - the Qt MetaObject Language, allowing declaration of User Interfaces and Experiences
* Qt Creator support for QML-based projects and code integration.

For the last year, QML and QtDeclarative has been available to both early adopters as well as mainstream developers through code pushed to gitorious as well as Qt 4.7.0 and 4.7.1 releases. Today the final piece of the puzzle has been launched: Qt Creator with the Qt Quick Designer.

Qt Quick Designer is a WYSIWYG editor for QML UI's, allowing you to visually create and arrange your UI's while staying in perfect sync with your QML code. This does not use a separate generative step like Qt Designer did – but directly manipulates your QML code. You can get Qt Creator along with the Qt Quick Designer and all the other features supporting Qt Quick from the downloads page.

In the near future some additional features for Qt Quick will be made available. This includes use-case specific elements for pinching touch interaction, free form touch interaction, support for Right-To-Left layouting and many other features and suggestions.

The team has also started last fall to build Qt Quick components for MeeGo and Symbian. While work is still continuing at a brisk pace on the MeeGo style, the Symbian style has now been fully transitioned to gitorious.org, allowing anyone to try it out on their Symbian ^3 device. This makes creating new Apps with native look and feel a lot easier and obsoletes the task of each developer having to creating reusable elements such as buttons, ListItems and so forth. Prime your ‘git clone’ and head to http://qt.gitorious.org/qt-components. To provide feedback you can use bugreports, and if you want to discuss you can use the mailing list or IRC.
