Canalys Q3 2005 report
|
| Nokia maintained its huge lead, with year-on-year growth of 142% being almost twice the market average. Particularly successful were its 3G Symbian Series 60 based smart phones, including the Nokia 6680, 6630, N90 and N70, but older devices, such as the 6600, continued to contribute to shipments, particularly in developing regions. Nokia's overall global market share position remains supported by its strength in EMEA, which Canalys estimates accounted for just under 70% of the vendor’s smart phone shipments in Q3. | A new (beta) release of OggPlay for S60 MMF phones has been released. The version 1.6.0, in addition to existing audio formats support (OGG, MP3, AAC), now also supports MP4 format. OggPlay can also play iTunes files, if they are renamed to .mp4. This release works on Nokia 7610 and Nokia 6620 (it also works on Nokia 6600, but only ogg files are supported). For more advanced users, the release also adds the possibility to select which MMF plugins are used, in the (unlikely) event where more than one plugin is available for same file format. | The Ogg Vorbis controller is a plug-in for the Symbian OS multimedia framework. It is a good example of how to write an MMF controller plug-in implementing a non-trivial codec. It allows any application which uses the multimedia framework to decode and play back Ogg Vorbis compressed audio files. This plug-in has been developed on Symbian OS v7.0s, and should also work on any later release. Over 2 million Symbian devices in Q4
|
According to the newest EMEA Canalys report more than 2 million Symbian devices shipped in Q4 2003. Nokia's smart phone range is unrivalled (77,9% market share in Voice centric category and 50,2% in All devices category), but other vendors have also boosted their offerings. Sony Ericsson's evolutionary P900 is performing better than its predecessor (second place - 9,7% and fourth place - 6,2% respectively) and Siemens finally got its SX1 to market.
"As enterprise spending on mobile device solutions grows, smart phone vendors will also want a piece of the action," said analyst Rachel Lashford. "Nokia continues to add to its range, and enjoyed a large initial ship out of the Nokia 6600 this quarter - its most 'corporate' smart phone handset to date. We expect Nokia to target the corporate mobility solutions segment very hard this year, and the Symbian OS is now reaching the shipment levels needed to make it a contender in the enterprise."

Nokia 6620
|
 Nokia today unveiled the new Nokia 6620 imaging phone, the first smartphone for the American market optimized for use on new high-speed EDGE networks. The 6620 is basically a GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/1900/1800 MHz version of the well known 6600 model, but there are many other changes and improvements. EDGE support provides up to 118 kbps network connection. Built-in MP3/AAC player generates stereo sound. Internal memory has been expanded to 12 megabytes and the device comes with 32 MB memory card. The operating system is optimized and faster. Nokia 6620 features a pop-port connector which provides cable connectivity. Read full press release @ Nokia.com. Opera on 6600 and downloadable
|
Opera browser is now included on the new Nokia 6600 mobile phones, bringing the full Internet to millions of mobile phone users.
After having been released on the new Nokia 6600, Opera Software today made available for download a new and improved browser that includes many of the enhancements made in the Nokia 6600 delivery for all other phones that are based on the Series 60 platform: Nokia 3650/7650/N-Gage. Opera 6.1 for Series 60 is much smaller than its predecessor and uses significantly less memory.
Series 60 phone owners can enjoy the full, open Internet in a meaningful way for the first time with Opera's Small-Screen Rendering (SSR) technology that reformats Websites to fit on small screens.
Opera 6.1 for Symbian includes an array of new features and improvements that all contribute to making Opera even more compelling for surfing from smartphones. Sendo launch their Series 60 phone
|
 Sendo today announced their new smartphone based on Series 60 platform called Sendo X.
Sendo X is a tri-band phone and incorporates a series of changes to the original Series 60 UI. The device weighs 120 g and is equipped with 16-bit (65536 colors) display with a resolution of 176x220 pixels. Sendo X includes 32 MB of storage memory and a MMC/SD memory card slot with hot-swap support. The main screen has been modified and is called Sendo Now! It can be customized by users with shortcuts to their favourite applications, documents and web pages.
Audio and video support is carried out by Sendo's multimedia engines called SoniX and GraphiX. Sendo X uses Symbian OS 6.1 and is based on the 'older' (than Nokia 6600) version of the Series 60 interface, also used by Siemens in their SX1 phone. The device incorporates a digital still camera (VGA - 640x480) with 4x digital zoom and integrated flash. Sendo supports video recording in MP4/3GPP format. Connectivity options include USB, Bluetooth and serial. Internet access is provided via GPRS and 14,4 kbps CSD.
Built-in Web/Wap browser comes from Opera and supports all latest standards like HTML 4.2, style sheets, frames, SSL, XHTML and more. Email client is integrated with a suite of PIM applications and provides full synchronisation with desktop PC.

New Series 60 phone: NOKIA 6600
|
 Nokia today announced a brand new Series 60 phone, the Nokia 6600.
The Nokia 6600 phone features new advanced imaging features, including a bright 65,536-color TFT display and camera equipped with 2x digital zoom. These complement a built-in video recorder with audio and a RealOne player for playback and streaming of 3GPP-compatible and RealMedia video clips. Multimedia functions are enhanced by templates for MMS messages and a Media Gallery for organizing digital content captured or downloaded with the phone. Advances in phone features include support for Java MIDP 2.0, True Tones, themes, and personalization of clock and calendar sounds.
The new Nokia 6600 is based on the latest Symbian OS v7.0s operating system. The phone is equipped with 6 MBytes of internal memory and comes with 32 MB MMC card. Nokia 6600 supports Bluetooth and infrared connection and is a triband phone (900/1800/1900 MHz). It weighs 122 grams (108.6 x 58.2 x 23.7mm, 113cc). The phone will be available in the 4th quarter of 2003.
