Samsung licenses Symbian OS
World's top five mobile phone manufacturers are now Symbian OS licensees. Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Symbian Ltd announce today that Samsung, the world's third largest mobile phone manufacturer, has signed an agreement to license Symbian OS for use in its smartphones for 2.5G and 3G networks worldwide. Samsung's first Symbian OS product will be a global data-enabled phone using the Series 60 user interface which Samsung has licensed from Nokia. Samsung selected Symbian OS on the basis of both market and technical merits. Symbian OS's advanced, open technology will enable Samsung to develop and bring smartphones to market rapidly. The growing market for Symbian OS products will enable Samsung to benefit from developers creating third party applications and services for Symbian OS phones.

Byung Duck Cho, Senior Vice President, Wireless Handsets, Samsung said: "Symbian has demonstrated its ability to deliver leading edge technology, stimulate product innovation and work closely with its licensees to ship industry-leading smartphones. We look forward to delivering open Symbian OS phones to global markets. The flexibility of the technology will allow us to produce innovative products with multi-media capabilities that provide a compelling experience for mobile users."

David Levin, Chief Executive, Symbian Ltd., said: "We are delighted to welcome Samsung as a Symbian OS licensee. Samsung is a leading developer of CDMA and GSM mobile phones for key Asian and other worldwide markets, with extensive experience in developing innovative high end multimedia mobile phones. We look forward to Samsung extending the choice of Symbian OS phones available to customers worldwide. With Samsung as a licensee, Symbian OS further strengthens its position as the industry standard operating system. Manufacturers representing over 80% of the mobile phone market are now Symbian OS licensees."

WWW forum
Starting from today our news server is no longer available for posting. It has been set to read only to provide access to archive messages. It will be switched off in a couple of weeks. From now on please use our new web based forum. Further supporting of a separate NNTP server was not only difficult from technical side, but also costly. I hope you will enjoy the new forum and continue your discussions and sharing information with other users. Thank you for your understanding.

Symbian on top in Europe
Symbian OS based devices were bestsellers in Europe in Q3 2002. Nokia takes lead, with 56% unit share (665,945 units sold). Second is Palm, with only 15% share, HP (9%), Toshiba (4%), Sony (3%) and others (13% in total). Nokia's Symbian devices sales growth in Q3 2002 compared to Q3 2001 is 322%! Well, that's still nothing. I think we will see a true revolution when low price, mass market 3650 model comes out. Detailed information: Canalys.

Microsoft Moebius 2002
Stay tuned for a detailed report about the Microsoft Moebius 2002 conference taking its place in Redmond, WA, USA. - together with 20 other popular web sites - has been given a chance to see what Microsoft and their partners are doing and planning for nearest future: PDAs, smartphones, Tablet PCs, Smart Displays and more. The conference is a good oportunity to see where the wireless market is heading and what customers can expect in just a few months to come. As everything in this world is relative, it is also quite a good chance to compare Microsoft projects to current and forthcoming Symbian OS based devices. We'll be happy to bring you all this information in the beginning of next week.
