Psion returns
Psion has decided to start working on software again. Not so long ago, the firm span-off its most of its software capabilities to create Symbian. Now the firm has decided to produce software for Symbian and it's off to a cracking start. The first offering will be a tool to synchronise a Symbian phone with Microsoft Outlook.

The software, called Transend, is a GPRS aware email package. It synchronises with Outlook instantaneously over the airwaves. More than just email, it also supports the To Do list and Diary entries. Basically, it covers all of the major functions of Outlook on a Nokia 7650 or Sony-Ericsson P800. The software works both ways. Create a diary entry on your 7650 and it will appear moments later in Outlook. Schedule a meeting in Outlook and there it is on your mobile.

Symbian launches Symbian OS v7.0s at Exposium03
Symbian Ltd today announce the launch of the latest version of Symbian OS, the global open industry standard operating system for advanced mobile phones.

The development of this latest Symbian OS release, Symbian OS v.7.0s, demonstrates that Symbian continues to deliver Symbian OS in step with the needs of Symbian OS licensees and the broader mobile industry. Symbian has delivered Symbian OS 7.0s to its licensees earlier this year. Symbian OS licensees will make announcements regarding products based on Symbian OS 7.0s in due course.

Symbian has enhanced Symbian OS in four particular areas: Telephony and Networking (Multiple PDP contexts, Quality Of Service framework), Java MIDP 2.0 and Sun's new Java virtual machine, Multimedia (lightweight, multi-threaded multimedia framework (MMF) which enables high-performance audio, video and imaging capabilities), Languages (native support for Arabic and Hebrew).

OPL source code available!
Symbian announced today that it has made its Open Programming Language (OPL) for Symbian OS v.6.0 and v6.1 available to the open source community. OPL is an easy to learn programming environment designed for rapid application development.

At Exposium03, held in London on 29th-30th April 2003, Symbian demonstrated an alpha release of OPL for Series 60 on Symbian OS v6.1.

By making OPL open source, Symbian ensures OPL will remain the most cost-effective and community friendly programming language. Open source OPL is attractive to a wide range of developers; from Symbian OS licensees wanting to offer an on-device programming language for the hobbyist developer or enterprise developers to tool vendors and to developers committed to open or free software.

The code is licensed under LGPL, the most popular open source license and is hosted on, the main repository of open source projects. The code can be downloaded from, and developers can participate at Symbian will work closely with the developer community to ensure the success of this project.

Intel becomes Symbian Platinum Partner
Intel Corporation and Symbian announced today that Intel has joined the Symbian Platinum Partner Program. Intel will also start providing a new software development kit (SDK) that includes Symbian OS version 7.0 to help developers accelerate the design process of data-enabled cellular phones and applications running on processors based on the Intel XScale microarchitecture.

As part of the Platinum Partner Program, Intel has access to a range of commercial services, as well as access to Symbian OS source code and Symbian's Partner Support Team.

Intel and Symbian worked together to optimize Symbian OS version 7.0 to provide rich multimedia and wireless capabilities for Intel XScale microarchitecture.
