New Canalys EMEA report - Q2 '04
Symbian continues to rule the smartphone mobile device segment, with 94% market share. Microsoft's share fell back to around 4% after a relatively good Q1, while PalmSource's, through the Treo 600, increased to just under 2%. Although the prospect of Nokia dominating the Symbian consortium in shareholding terms has diminished, it still represented 85% of all Symbian devices shipped in Q2, up from 81% in Q1. Nokia still takes the first place in "All devices" category, with 52,4% share and 1,351,400 units sold in Q2 2004 (61% growth). Check details @ Canalys.com.

Barefoot Cardmate
Over the past 3 years Barefoot Software has developed the eyeGT middleware SDK with a very strong proprietary graphics engine geared towards applications for mobile devices. Through the later part of this development Barefoot developed a derivative product known as Cardmate using some of the rich graphics features of eyeGT. Cardmate as an infrastructure was quickly developed, customized and deployed in the Hong Kong mobile market and is now available to other content and mobile operators around the world.

Think of Cardmate as an application that resides on the users Smartphone handset. Barefoot then build mini applications known as connectors that self-install within the Cardmate application. An example of a free Cardmate can be downloaded and installed on a Smarphone to very quickly demonstrate the quality and ease of Cardmate to deliver truly rich and interactive text, images and video on today's Smartphones.

Visit Barefoot Software to learn more about Cardmate and download Cardmate and example connectors.

Symbian OS benchmark coming soon
Futuremark Corporation well known from their series of PC benchmarks (3DMark, PCMark, SYSMark etc.) is working on a benchmarking program for Symbian OS devices. SPMark04 will work on the latest Symbian OS based phones, and will enable you to professionally measure and compare performance and power consumption across various smartphones and workloads. SPMark04 will include performance and power consumption tests for 3D, 2D and system workloads. 3D tests will include an advanced 3D gaming scene and theoretical tests for 3D performance measurement. 2D section will feature 2D content displaying and image manipulation tests. System tests in SPMark04 will represent the real usage of a smartphone, e.g. adding entries to calendar and looking up contacts. SPMark04 will be available in Q3 2004. More information @ Futuremark.com.

Mobile industry backs
Symbian for mobile OS leadership
Symbian's continuing shareholders reiterate their continued full support for Symbian's strategy and objectives as an independent, for-profit company, and have provided significant further investment to ensure the long-term success of Symbian OS as the industry's chosen technology platform for mass market, advanced phones for 2.5 and 3G networks. Shareholders have participated in a rights issue to raise £50m in additional funding for Symbian. Nokia, Panasonic, Siemens and Sony Ericsson have also agreed to participate in the pre-emption process for the purchase of Psion's equity stake in Symbian. The process is expected to complete on 12th July 2004. In addition, Shareholders have jointly agreed to appoint an independent, non-executive Chairman to the Symbian Board.

Highlights:

* £50m rights issue to accelerate investment in Symbian OS development to facilitate further adoption of Symbian OS as a platform for lower cost, mass market advanced phones.
Symbian's costbase will expand from c.£70m to c.£100m per annum, with permanent employee & contractor headcount rising from c.900 to c.1,200.
* Symbian's continuing shareholders will appoint an independent, non-executive Chairman to the Board. The selection process is under way and is anticipated to be completed during the latter half of the year.
* The pre-emption process to determine allocation of Psion's 31.1% equity stake amongst Shareholders has been completed; the new shareholding structure will be as follows: Ericsson 15.6%, Sony Ericsson 13.1%, Nokia 47.9%, Panasonic 10.5%, Samsung 4.5%, Siemens 8.4%.
* In subscribing to the rights issue and in purchasing Psion's equity, Shareholders will invest a total of £187.7m in their shareholdings in Symbian.
* Shareholder and non-shareholder Symbian OS licensees continue to expand their use of Symbian OS as a platform for advanced phones. At 30th June 2004, 34 phones and variants based on Symbian OS were being readied for market by 10 licensees (Q2 2003 - 26 phones, 9 licensees).
