First 3G SymbianOS phone by Fujitsu
Fujitsu has introduced the first Symbian OS 3G smartphone to be launched in Japan. The product marks an impressive step forward with an enhanced graphical user interface, still and movie camera, email capability as well as advanced PIM applications. This product is the result of close co-operation between Symbian and Fujitsu both to create a Symbian OS user interface for the Japanese language as well to optimize Symbian OS for NTT DoCoMo's 3G FOMA network.

The phone will be available for end customers in Japan by the end of December 2002. Again Japanese vendors are leading technological progress: no European handset vendor announced yet 3G cellphones with Symbian, again Europe lags behind Japan. Read more @

OPL to become Open Source project!
Symbian and its partners announced yesterday that OPL will become an Open Source project. We consider this one of the most important and momentous news of the current year.

What does this mean to users and developers? OPL is an easy to learn yet powerful language. Because of its Basic-like syntax it can be quickly and easily absorbed by almost anyone, allowing ordinary users to create fully-featured applications for Symbian OS. And this means only one thing: hundreds or thousands of applications made by enthusiasts, hobbyists and individual developers. A true community and rapidly growing software selection.

Microsoft has just released its MS Smartphone 2002, which is seriously limited (or better: crippled) by its certification system. It is only possible to install applications with valid security certificates. Certification takes time and costs hundreds USD. Moreover, developers have to certify not only new products, but also every update! Even changing one byte in binary code requires passing certification again (and paying). Forget about small developer companies and individuals creating software for SPV and its followers. Forget about freeware when you have to pay hundreds for making it installable!

Symbian OS has now a unique chance to go the entirely opposite way! To become a system widely open for every hobbyist, student, developer. Where everyone - for free - can put his ideas into a program for own or public use. Remember those Ataris and Commodores with embedded Basic interpreters? What was usually the very first thing people were doing right after bringing them home? Typing: PRINT "HELLO" RUN. Programming!

Moving OPL to Open Source provides unique chance to port it to Series 60, UIQ, Series 90. Let's not lose that opportunity! addresses this news to all Symbian OS developers. Join your forces! Take your part in porting OPL to Series 60 and UIQ, and then to the new Communicator! Make OPL available for all Symbian OS based devices and even more powerful by using your experience and providing your resources and skills. Don't worry about OPL programs becoming a competition to your C++ products. Making Symbian OS even stronger will make YOU stronger in the end. Let's give Symbian OS that "Linux taste".

Details are being discussed now and the project is going to be available real soon. We will keep you informed of every single news regarding this matter. Stay tuned!
