First trojan to disable ability to make a call
SimWorks announced today that it has identified the first threat able to disrupt the functioning of a Symbian phone that it can no longer be used to make phone calls. Previously identified threats, such as the Skulls trojans, have affected only the higher level functions of a device, not it's ability to make calls. Gavno is spread under the file-name patch.sis or patch_v2.sis and masquerades as a patch for Symbian OS. The patch_v2.sis file also contains a copy of Cabir and Camtimer trojan. Gavno.a cripples the system by using a malformed file to crash an internal Symbian process. Full press release is available @ SimWorks. Anybody can rename patch.sis to anything else so better watch out and only download files from trusted sources like

Now, after reading the above officially sounding press release, don't panic! The danger is much lower than it seems, the "virus" can't attack you by itself, you have to download it, put your on your phone and install it. Just avoid downloading unknown programs from suspicious web sites, warez servers or groups. If you only download your applications from trusted sources like My-Symbian, other known and reputable Symbian community websites or developers' websites then you are totally secure. Read Steve Litchfield's article about viruses targetting Symbian OS smartphones @ 3-Lib to learn more.

[Upd] Vibor 1.2 for A92x and A1000
The A920/A925 cannot vibrate and play a ringtone at the same time during an incoming call. Vibor makes it possible. Version 1.2 also supports A1000. The A1000 doesn't have a real vibrating-device like the A92x built in, it uses its specially designed speakers instead. That means it's very difficult to vibrate and play music/audio independently at the same time with a satisfying result, but Vibor does its best. It also has an additional functionality: 2 different profiles of vibrate-alert-patterns can be set up, one will be used when the handset's keys and display are locked, the other when unlocked. Trial version is available in our Downloads. Full version can be purchased in the Online shop.

Decuma becomes first company to join UIQ Alliance Program
UIQ Technology today announced the new partnership program, UIQ Alliance, which is targeting a chosen set of companies providing applications or services, based on the UIQ user interface. The UIQ Alliance Partner Program provides an increased choice of UIQ compatible technologies and knowledge that will be introduced to UIQ customers.

"Members of the UIQ Alliance will possess diverse skills and experience, and deliver a variety of compelling technologies, products and services to the growing ecosystem built around UIQ," says Johan Sandberg, CEO, UIQ Technology. "This will make it easier for mobile phone manufacturers to find good products and services supporting UIQ, which will be of high importance to the creation of a mass market for mobile phones based on UIQ".

The first member to be chosen in the UIQ Alliance Partner Program is Decuma with their handwriting recognition software that currently covers Japanese and Chinese as well as western languages, a width not offered by anyone else in the market.

Decuma offers Decuma Japanese, which handles the different writing styles used in Japanese: Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji, plus numbers and Latin characters. Decuma Chinese handles natural variations in Chinese writing: printed, semi-cursive and common cursive styles. Decuma OnSpot is a handwriting recognition software for US and European American characters. The software supports both single character and multi character input of non-cursive text. Current solutions are for mobile phones based on UIQ and Symbian OS.

UIQ Alliance partners can join the program by invitation only. Additional UIQ Alliance partners will soon be announced.

[Upd] N-Player 0.17 UIQ
SomeOne a.k.a AnotherGuest has released new version of his freeware SID/MOD/AY player for UIQ phones - the N-Player. With N-Player you can play all those old great Spectrum, Commodore 64 and Amiga modules and more. What's new:

* New version of ModPlug (1.16). Removed MIDI support as it just sounded terrible. Should work generally better than the old version and supporting 8 new formats.
* Fixed filter bug in libsidplay, but it still can act up. (But filters on is really the best way to enjoy your SIDs).
* Cleaned up the UI a bit. More playlist, smaller and clearer file info.
* Made a new file selection dialog, displaying all your audio folders both internal/external. Multiple selection is also possible.
* Added new navigation using jogdial on P800/P900. Should work using the joystick on the Moto phones.
* Global volume now also works on mods.
* Next song play added for MODs/AYs. SIDs will play forever until you change song.
* Added saving of total SID play on to disk. (So you can keep track of how long you are listening to your SIDs).
* Added volume control above the buttonbar. So now you have lots of ways to control the volume.
* And some other fixes/updates.. Modplug is loaded as a DLL, AY & SID support is built into the APP, and compressed using ECompXL.

N-Player is available in our Downloads.
