Nokia 7710 Theme Studio available
Nokia 7710 Theme Studio is a PC tool for creating themes for Nokia 7710 smartphone. A theme is a definition for the appearance of the phone's user interface. With the tool, a user can create, edit, and view themes to customize wallpaper, application icons, color schemes, and more for the user interface. Nokia 7710 Theme Studio for Symbian OS will create the appropriate *.sis files. Themes can be saved to a hard drive and then deployed to a device using Bluetooth wireless technology or USB cable. Symbian OS phone shipments rearch 14.4 million in 2004
Shipments of Symbian OS phones doubled in 2004 to 14.4 million phones – the third consecutive year in which Symbian OS phone shipments grew more than 100%. 41 Symbian OS phones are currently shipping from eight Symbian OS licensees to more than 200 network operators worldwide, with 40 Symbian OS phones currently under development by 10 licensees. Nokia makes friends with Microsoft
Today at the 3GSM World Congress, Microsoft and Nokia announced they are working together to ensure consumers can enjoy music from the newly launched mobile music solution offered by Nokia and Loudeye to wireless operators on both Nokia handsets and on Microsoft Windows XP-based PCs. The two companies have also agreed to long-term collaboration on extended digital media format support. This collaboration includes support for Windows Media Audio, Windows Media Digital Rights Management (DRM) 10 and Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) on music oriented Nokia handsets, and including support for Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) Digital Rights Management and the MPEG Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) family of codecs in Windows Media Player via a plug-in. [New] Digia ImageExpo
Digia ImageExpo is the ideal presentation and demonstration tool for Symbian devices and applications: it enables displaying the phone screen on a PC or video projector in real time via Bluetooth, USB or Internet connection. The software consists of two parts: an application installed in the Symbian phone and another application in a PC. Digia ImageExpo connects to the PC and projects the device screen on the PC display. An advanced compression algorithm guarantees seamless data transfer and accurate colour and image reproduction, making the presentation enjoyable for the audience. Symbian OS 9 launched
Symbian Limited today announces the launch of Symbian OS version 9, the latest evolution of the world's leading smartphone operating system.

Symbian's key strategic focus is to ensure Symbian OS is adopted as a platform for the development of higher volume and lower cost, advanced phones for 2.5G and 3G networks around the world. Symbian OS v9 helps lower Symbian OS licensee development costs and accelerate time to market for smaller, less expensive and even more capable Symbian OS smartphones. As a robust, secure, open and standards-based platform, Symbian OS v9 will support network operators' cost-effective deployment of revenue-generating services, content and applications.

Symbian OS licensees have phones based on Symbian OS v9 in development, with product launches anticipated during the second half of 2005. Key enhancements in Symbian OS v9 include:

* Enabling multimedia phones – Symbian OS v9 supports Bluetooth stereo headsets, USB mass storage, advanced audio mixing and playback, as well as the latest MPEG and OMA DRM standards. It also supports the coming generation of multi-mega-pixel cameraphones. Enhanced support for 3D graphics, multimedia and graphics acceleration as well as support for different screen sizes and orientations, and simultaneous multiple displays make Symbian OS v9 a flexible and powerful platform for gaming-oriented handsets.

* Managing Symbian OS phones – the enhanced Device Management framework implemented in Symbian OS v9 gives network operators and enterprises new capabilities to manage phones in the field.

* Supporting the Enterprise – Symbian OS v9 provides new enterprise functions such as enhanced filtering and sorting of IMAP email, as well as new group scheduling capabilities, including accepting meeting invitations from standard PIM applications such as Lotus Notes or Microsoft Outlook. Symbian OS v9's Java implementation gives developers the opportunity to access the functionality and performance of Symbian OS to create advanced Java-based applications and services.

* Enabling advanced network operator services – Symbian OS security capabilities have been evolved in Symbian OS v9 to a finer-grained security model that will help network operators deploy more advanced m-commerce services and DRM-protected content to Symbian OS phones.

* Even better phone performance – Symbian OS v9 supports the latest generation of ARM-based processors that will enable faster and more powerful Symbian OS phones with improved battery life.

* Accelerating time to market and reducing development costs – reference designs from leading semiconductor vendors such as Intel are targeting Symbian OS v9. Reference designs pre-integrate Symbian OS with target hardware, enabling handset manufacturers to reduce Symbian OS phone development time and costs, and to focus development on new competitive and innovative features.

* Reducing Symbian OS phone build cost – new software development tools for Symbian OS v9 include ARM's RealView compiler that substantially improves performance of gaming and multimedia applications. The hard real-time kernel introduced in Symbian OS v8.0 allows manufacturers to build Symbian OS phones based on a single core processor that integrates the two processors (baseband and application processors) commonly used today, thereby helping handset manufacturers reduce phone build costs

Tools for Symbian OS 9 give developers flexibility and choice
In parallel with today's announcement of Symbian OS v9, Symbian announces that a wide range of standards-based tools designed to facilitate the development of phones and applications based on Symbian OS v9.

CodeWarrior for Symbian OS v3.0 provides IDE support for Symbian OS v9. CodeWarrior offers a comprehensive set of features for device integration, application, middleware and game development projects.

For entry level application development, Symbian is developing an IDE based on the open source Eclipse tool platform. Eclipse-based tools for Symbian OS v9 will be made available for free from the Symbian website in the second half of 2005.

Symbian has used ARM's RealView Compilation Tools (RVCT version 2) to build Symbian OS v9. This high performance compiler replaces the GCC 2.98 compiler used previously. RVCT enables substantial performance improvements in key phone capabilities such as graphics, multi-media, cryptography as well as artificial intelligence and other types of computation used especially in gaming applications. On ARM v5-based chipsets initially being used for phones based on Symbian OS v9, the performance differential between RVCT and GCC 2.98 is greater than 30 % for intensive computing tasks. As new ARM architecture features such as ARMv 6, Thumb - 2 and the Neon™ SIMD pipeline are introduced into Symbian OS phones in the next two to three years, the performance differential will widen to orders of magnitude.

Symbian continues to support a free GCC compiler for application development in contexts where high performance commercial compiler is not required. Symbian OS v9 initially requires a GCC 3.4 release instead of GCC 2.98 to assure compatibility with RVCT. GCC support for Symbian OS v9 will be available from Symbian from the middle of 2005.
