Nokia 5230 announced
Nokia has just announced the Nokia 5230, a lower end S60 5th Edition (Symbian OS v9.4) smartphone, featuring single ARM11-based 434 MHz CPU, 70 MB internal storage memory and microSD memory card slot (up to 16 GB), 3.2" (640x360 pixel) display, 2 Megapixel camera, A-GPS, dual-band WCDMA (HSDPA), quad-band GSM, Bluetooth 2.0 (with A2DP and AVRCP), high-speed USB 2.0 and 3.5 mm audio jack. The phone will be available in three variants: WCDMA 2100/900, 2100/850 and 1900/850. The basic version will cost €149 before taxes, and the "Comes With Music" version will cost €259. To reach this price level, the device will not include WiFi, there will be no memory card included, and the camera is an entry level, low resolution one. While feature-wise this phone won't be a competition killer, the price (for what it gives in exchange, i.e. a fully functional touchscreen, HSDPA smartphone with A-GPS and good music capabilities) surely is a big advantage. Available in six different colours (red, pink, blue, yellow, silver, dark silver), weighing 113 g and measuring 111 x 51.7 x 14.5 mm (78 cc), i.e. almost identically as the 5800 XpressMusic, the device will start shipping in the fourth quarter of 2009.

More information: Official press release, Nokia Conversations, Product pages, Full technical specifications, Picture gallery. Discuss this new model on our S60 5th Edition Discussion Forum.

[Upd] Skyfire 1.1 for S60
New version 1.1 of the Skyfire web browser has been released, bringing a number of updates and improvements, including better recognition of mobile websites, support for WAP sites, better reconnection, and optimized scrolling and zooming. Skyfire is a "server side" browser similar to Opera Mini, rendering web pages on a proxy server and delivering a ready-to-display page to the mobile phone, providing support for Flash, Silverlight, Javascript, Quicktime and more. Unfortunately, the browser still only support S60 3rd Edition phones so owners of 5th Edition touchscreen devices will need to wait for another update.

New Symbian Signed test criteria - your comments wanted
Symbian Foundation have been working on new Symbian Signed test criteria supposed to "guarantee the origin of the application and to ensure that the application is 'well-behaved' when installed onto the device" and they're asking for developers' input.

It's good that something's changing about Symbian Signed. Hopefully, the new criteria will be accompanied by a fix that will finally block the OS hack. Available and not fixed for over a year now, it allows for installing unsigned software, including de-signed commercial releases, and thus makes Symbian Signed actually of no use. One look at any warez site's download counters clearly shows that in its current (hacked) state Symbian Signed does NOT protect against anything, and actually only annoys developers (who still have to go through the certification, pay for it while not really getting the promised protection) and honest end users (who have to waste time on signing unsigned freeware using quite cumbersome Open Signed Online).

Blocking the OS hack for good is the only way to stimulate (now very poor) 3rd party software development. In order for more developers to get interested in creating valuable, commercial software for Symbian OS, Symbian Signed must finally guarantee that signed applications are REALLY protected against being un-signed in no time and freely installable on all hacked phones. Or else it only scares developers away involving procedures (and costs) that actually do not give anything in exchange.

Let's also hope that the Open Signed Online procedure (used mostly to sign unsigned freeware) also gets improved soon. Why not make it really online, i.e. directly on the phone, as part of the onboard Installer functionality? An attempt to install unsigned application could make the Installer (of course, after obtaining user's permition) contact the Open Signed server, submit required information (like phone IMEI, application details, etc.), get the certificate and sign it directly on the phone. Isn't this what we have 'always connected' devices for? Or is it too much to be desired at the end of the first decade of the 21st century? It would surely make Symbian Signed being considered a useful and friendly protection and not a hated restriction, and millions of people would lose reasons to hack their phones...
