Maemo no more... It's MeeGo now
While it wasn't clear yesterday when cooperation with Intel and transition into MeeGo has been announced, it has just been confirmed that that the Maemo brand will NOT be used for the upcoming platform releases. There will NOT be Maemo 6, there will be MeeGo. What does it actually mean? For end users, actually nothing but a new name. For developers, not much new, either. It'll be the same Qt 4.6 based platform as it was going to be.

While all the new possibilities resulting from the cooperation with Intel and 'unification' with Moblin are really exciting, it's just a little bit disappointing that the time, money and efforts sacrificed over the last 6 months on promoting the Maemo brand will now (at least partially) get wasted. And not just the 'official' resources but also e.g. dozens of websites like this one, Internet domains, Tweeter accounts/user names, and so on, everything will have to be rebranded and relaunched. What a waste.

But what can we do... It's time for My-MeeGo. The domain is already there and rebranding will follow soon....

MeeGo: Maemo and Moblin join forces
Nokia and Intel announced today that Maemo and Moblin (Intel's Linux platform known from netbooks) will be merged to create MeeGo, a Linux-based software platform that will support multiple hardware architectures across the broadest range of device segments, including pocketable mobile computers, netbooks, tablets, mediaphones, connected TVs and in-vehicle infotainment systems.

MeeGo offers the Qt application development environment, and builds on the capabilities of the Moblin core operating system and reference user experiences. Using Qt, developers can write once to create applications for a variety of devices and platforms, and market them through Nokia's Ovi Store and Intel AppUpSM Center.

MeeGo will be hosted by the Linux Foundation and governed using the best practices of the open source development model. Nokia and Intel expect MeeGo to be adopted widely by global device manufacturers, network operators, semiconductor companies, software vendors and developers.

The first release of MeeGo is expected in the second quarter of 2010 with devices launching later in the year. It is not yet clear what will be the naming convention of future Nokia devices: just MeeGo, Maemo MeeGo, Maemo 6, etc.

More information:, MeeGo Wiki, MeeGo Architecture, Nokia Press release, Ari Jaaksi's (Head of Maemo at Nokia) blog post.
